The Cape Girardeau City Council has two new members and soon will have a third.

Joseph Uzoaru, the member for Ward 1, and Shelly Moore, who represents Ward 2, were sworn in last week to serve on the city council. Uzoaru replaces John Voss and Moore replaces Meg Davis.

Trent Summers recently stepped down from representing Ward 3 on the council due to an upcoming move outside the ward's representation. The seat will be filled temporarily by the council. Four individuals picked up petitions for consideration. The four people are Victor R. Gunn, Evan Trump, Patrick Koetting and Charles DiStefano.

Those interested in serving Ward 3 going forward have through May 20 to file. Trump and Gunn have filed and Susan Smith and Koetting picked up petitions but had not filed as of noon Wednesday.

The election for Ward 3 is set for Aug. 5. If more than two candidates file, the election will be a primary with the general election to be held in November. If only two candidates file, the August election will serve as the general election.

If you are not registered to vote, the last day to register for the August election is July 9.

We appreciate those individuals who put their names on a ballot. Thank you to Voss, Davis and Summers for their service to Cape Girardeau, and welcome to Uzoaru and Moore.
