As the votes came in Tuesday night, everyone knew the bond issue was going to pass. But I had never been so proud to call Cape Girardeau my home as I was that night. The people of Cape Girardeau came together to vote yes for our schools, sending a message, loud and clear, to our children that "we care about you and your education, and with that education you can be successful in life."

I want to say thank you to Cape Girardeau for believing in our schools. I realize that times are difficult. The economic challenges that we face are real, and difficult decisions are being made daily to find ways to weather this storm. At the same time, the people of Cape Girardeau realize there are few things more important to our children than a quality education, an education that offers opportunities for every student. The passing of this bond issue will offer new opportunities to all students at all grade levels while allowing issues at each of our schools to be addressed without stressing an already decreasing operations budget.

Again, I say thank you for giving Cape Girardeau's public schools your support and trust and for coming together to do what is right for our children, because it does take a community to educate a child, and Cape Girardeau proved that April 6.
