Celebrating safely

Graduation ceremonies have already begun, and it's a time to celebrate those educational achievements.

Getting that diploma took a lot of time and effort, and it's one of the milestones of leaving childhood behind and walking into the steps of adulthood.

But part of adulthood is being responsible, and graduation offers no excuse for illegal underage drinking or driving while intoxicated. We've heard and read too many stories of graduation parties resulting in deadly accidents.

The Cape Girardeau Police Department is cracking down on drunken driving through May 13, according to a news release issued by the department. Anyone younger than 21 years old caught driving with any alcohol in his or her system could be punished with a suspended license and potential consequences of jail time, loss of license, ignition interlocks and fines.

We encourage everyone to play a role in responsible celebrating this time of year.
