Major improvements on a vital stretch of Independence Street in Cape Girardeau has begun. Major improvements on a vital stretch of Independence Street in Cape Girardeau has begun.

In the coming months, certain intersections will be closed for up to three weeks at a time as workers make their way from Pacific Street to Kingshighway widening and improving the road. One-way traffic is planned between Kings¿highway and Caruthers Avenue.

This will, no doubt, cause some inconvenience for motorists who use this busy street. But the road currently is narrow, and the pavement is in bad shape. It is in dire need of some attention.

The project will be a huge improvement. As we've seen in other Cape Girardeau street projects, the temporary inconvenience is well worth the end result. Please be careful around this and all construction zones.
