LETTERS: RODEO ANIMALS NEED PROTECTION FROM CRUELTY

With rodeo time rapidly approaching, I would like to voice a concern I have had for quite some time.

In your newspaper not too long ago, I saw an article regarding calf roping at rodeos. It talked about the possibility that calf roping might be considered inhumane treatment and cruelty to animals. I truly believe that it is. Yes, they may be farm animals, but they do not deserve to be roped, thrown to the ground, tied up and dragged by a horse just for the sheer enjoyment of the crowd. To me, this is almost as horrendous as bullfighting. Thank God we do not have that sport in our country yet.

I don't think harming animals for sport should be allowed. We have already outlawed cockfighting and dog fights and are working on doing away with cruelty to circus animals.

It is my opinion that rodeos should continue and provide entertainment to those who enjoy those sorts of things, but not at the expense of innocent little calves. Is there anyone out there overseeing these events such as the Department of Agriculture or the Humane Society?
