When some public institutions and officials say they want to better communicate with their constituents it's too often lip service.

The idea of better communication is important in any line of communication, but it is easier said than done.

In the public realm, an essential aspect to communication is adjusting to technology, and opening communication lines with new platforms.

That's what the Cape Girardeau Police Department did recently with the unveiling of a new phone app.

The app allows for people to share crime tips anonymously using a smartphone.

People can also text "CAPEPD" to 847411 with a message or tip, submit tips online at cityofcape.org/crimetips or call a tips hotline at 339-6313.

When police chief Wes Blair came to Cape Girardeau, he said he wanted to improve communications with the people. This is certainly an example of Blair and the department walking the walk.

The police department has done a number of things to open communications with the community. Now it's up to the residents to take advantage of the opportunity to make the city a safer place.
