U.S. Rep. Glenn Poshard, who in his fifth and final congressional term continues to do an excellent job of representing Southern Illinoisans, has become the first declared candidate for Illinois governor.
Poshard not only would bring exceptional experience and know-how to the governor's office, but unmatched integrity as well.
The Carterville Democrat always has shunned campaign contributions from special-interest groups. He vowed to do the same in his gubernatorial race. That policy detaches him from those who would call upon him to support their causes.
Poshard, 51, isn't naive. He knows it will take a lot of money to win a gubernatorial primary contest and even more to win the office. He has set a goal of collecting $1.7 million for the Democratic primary in contributions that won't exceed $2,000 from a single donor. He said he is confident he can win even if his opponents spend double that much.
Poshard brings a refreshing approach to the gubernatorial race. He will deserve voters' serious consideration.
