Disability red tape

MY HUSBAND just passed away. He was a World War II veteran on disability. Now that he has passed on, I have tried to get my share of the disability, but the officials I talk to say I have too much money. I had $425 in the bank, and that's too much with funeral, hospital and doctor bills and trying to keep a roof over my head. Good luck to all of you widows trying to get what is rightfully yours.

Train at grave site

I HAVE a sad story. Our grandson passed away in June 2004, he was 3 years old. The love of his short life was trains, Thomas the Tank mainly. From the time he passed away we searched for the perfect train to place at his grave site. We went to all kinds of ceramic and concrete places. No one had a train. We kept searching. We finally found an angel that had a place where she could hold a Thomas the Tank engine. She would have to do. Lo and behold about two months ago we were making our rounds at a concrete place, and there was a train. Of course we ordered one immediately. Two weeks later Cody had his train. A few days later we were ordered to remove it because it was improper. We were told the angel was OK. Will someone please explain this to me?

Don't blame ethanol

THERE TRULY may be a shortage of wheat because of unexpected weak crops in other parts of the world, but it is not the fault of ethanol. Most ethanol is made from sugar cane or corn. None is made from wheat. Wheat always costs more because it is for human consumption.

Who's the lender?

THE MOST difficult question to answer in 2007: Who owns your home mortgage?

Special program

IN REGARD to the comment that socialized medicine would work because it would be much like the Veterans Administration: Veterans give several years of their lives to be eligible for that program and deserve a special program. Many have been in war situations. Some have been wounded. All were ready to go when asked. That said, the special program is not that great. A veteran must be put on a waiting list several months long just for a checkup. If he or she needs surgery, it must be approved first and then may have to travel to get it.

Cat is returned

MY DAUGHTER has been distraught over losing her cat. Today she found him at the animal shelter. She was told the police had brought him in. They chipped him, and you can believe we will definitely be making a donation. Thank you, Cape Girardeau police. There really is a Santa Claus.

There goes the parking

I HAVE lived next to Southeast Missouri State University many decades and have witnessed the parking and traffic congestion due to the university's development. This week the board of regents voted to build another 300-person dormitory at Henderson Avenue and Broadway, eliminating a large parking lot. Parking is so bad. Students are parked in every available space in our neighborhood, creating dangerous conditions and urban blight. Student parking completely fills Capaha Park. With all the land the university has available north of the Show Me Center, the board still opted to build at Henderson and Broadway because the Greeks objected to more distant sites.

Thanks for haircut

THANK YOU, Stuart Swift, for helping me pay for my haircut. I did not know the barber would not accept checks. You have a caring heart, and you are a wonderful man. I hope everything good comes you way in 2008. Again, thank you.

Great employees

THE EMPLOYEES at the Jackson Post Office are polite, kind and helpful. Even with the busy Christmas season, they still treat customers with kindness.

Better than ever

THE LIGHTS and displays at the Cape County Park North are more spectacular than ever. Way to go to all involved. God bless you all.

Uplifting experience

MY FRIENDS and I attended the wonderful Tour of Lights with more than 150 people. We were indeed treated like royalty during the tour and at the reception afterward. The refreshments were delicious and the giveaways were much appreciated. It was a great experience. and we salute SALT and all involved for a very uplifting Christmas experience. Thank you.

Bring some cheer

WHAT TO buy at Christmas has always been a problem for people. I am a senior citizen. I live in low-income housing, but I'm a happy senior citizen. What I would like -- and I'm sure most senior citizens my age would like -- is someone to spend an hour, have a cup of coffee, bring a plate of cookies or something homemade and visit. A short visit is all I require. I don't need people around me 24 hours a day. Neither do I need a new sweater or socks or underwear or anything like that. I buy them for myself if I need them. What I need is a little company and a little cheering up.

Thanks for snowplows

IT'S 5:45 a.m. on Sunday morning. We've got our snow, and God bless the city of Jackson workers who are out with their snowplows on Greensferry Road. We appreciate you guys so much and wish you and yours a blessed Christmas and new year.

Confusing system

I AM no Grinch. For many years, I have given food, clothing and toys to the needy. I also have supported the Salvation Army and volunteered my time any way I can to help the less fortunate. That being said, I am unable to understand the unmarried women who continue giving birth to poor babies who have no better chance of being anything than their mothers growing up on welfare. Why the fathers are not made to support their children, I have no idea. Instead of toys and clothing, these women should be asking for birth control. I'm confused by our system.

This is victory?

I'M READING the Opinion column "Specter of victory: The turnaround in Iraq is proving embarrassing for critics of the war effort." You've got to be kidding. Think of the billions of dollars not accounted for, the other billions being spent, thousands of GIs wounded, 4,000 killed and over 400,000 Iraqis killed. For what?

Safe driving

ON AN undivided highway through a city there is no such thing as a right lane to be in. Imagine if every driver through Jackson in the morning tried to crowd into the right lane, What a mess. Motorists are more likely to cause an accident by tailgating and weaving in and out of traffic. The speed limit is the maximum allowable speed. You can drive under it if you choose.
