Thanks, police

I WOULD like to thank the Cape Girardeau Police Department, which quickly responded to my house when someone was trying to get in my front door. Thank you also to the dispatcher who stayed on the phone with me until the officers arrived. Thank you all.

Deadbeat moms

Why do people always talk about deadbeat dads? There are also deadbeat moms. Some dads pay child support to deadbeat moms who never spend the money they receive on their children's clothing, medical bills or eye care. Nor do they contribute to their needs for school supplies and social activities. In general, they are deadbeat moms who keep this money for themselves. Then they expect the dads to purchase all of the above needs.

Widow's benefits

EVERY TIME a comment is made by a woman who is supposedly a World War II veteran's widow claiming she is unable to receive benefits because of this reason or that, I am disgusted. I am the widow of a World War II veteran, and so are many of my friends. None of us has ever had any problems receiving exactly what we are entitled to. Our husbands made sure years ago that they knew what their benefits were and what ours would be when they passed away. They shared the documents they received from Veterans Affairs with us so we'd know what to do when they passed on. Out of seven of us, we all received at least what we expected, and three women received more. I think some people just share half of the story, hoping to stir up resentment toward the VA and undue sympathy for themselves. If you feel you aren't getting what you're entitled to, don't complain here. Call U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson's office.

Fantasy writing

PHILIP PULLMAN'S "His Dark Materials" trilogy, "The Golden Compass" being the first novel, is a fine piece of literary work. Many people have already judged the novels before giving them a try. As an avid fantasy reader, I find his work is some of the most original. Many fantasy novels aim to solely entertain. At least "His Dark Materials" challenges the minds of readers with social ideals. Give the books a try. You may find you were missing out on a soon-to-be favorite.

Kooky columnist

KOOKY COLUMNIST Kathryn Lopez wrote she would have picked Joe Lieberman and a couple of other guys if she were Time magazine's Person of the Year editor. This is exactly the reason Lopez is not Time's editor and will forever remain in exile at the once proud, traditional, conservative, now disgraced, neoconservative National Review, where she spills a lot of ink harping against the rise of Mike Huckabee, a product of the Southern evangelical community she and others have pandered to and patronized for decades in order to win the White House.

Loyalty comes first

THOUGH NINE times out of 10 I disagree with David Limbaugh, I have always given him credit for elevating principle above any other considerations. No more. In an anti-Mike Huckabee rant, Limbaugh took to task rather than praising Huckabee for expressing a principled disagreement with President Bush in an article published in Foreign Affairs magazine. Limbaugh alleged that in the article Huckabee showed disloyalty to our current commander in chief. This is illustrative of the fact that Limbaugh places more emphasis on loyalty to the president than principled intraparty disagreement and thus can be seen as little more than on a par with die-hard Nixonian loyalist and Watergate criminal G. Gordon Liddy.
