Civilian regiment

I am amazed how many nonmilitary people have the solution to ending the war in Iraq. I bet most would be a great service to the services involved in Iraq. Maybe we should start a Southeast Missouri civilian regiment made up of the chicken hawks of Southeast Missouri. The military is stretched thin and hurting for recovery time home before being redeployed. Bet these chicken hawks could give them a spell for at least one year. Alas, they are too busy, must make a living, wife won't let them, have an ingrown toenail and numerous other excuses to keep their tails safe but allow them to mouth off.

Attend public schools

ONE OF the criteria for the new Cape Girardeau school superintendent should be that his or her children, if they have any, must attend public schools. If the school system isn't good enough for the the superintendent's children, that person shouldn't be in charge of the school district.

Protective orders

MY HEART goes out to the family involved in the Jackson shootings. The mother has lost two of her children. I think when a judge writes a protection order the authorities should pick the man up right then and keep him in jail until there is a hearing so the woman and her children will be protected.

At least be thoughtful

A STRAW-MAN argument is an informal fallacy based on misrepresentation of an opponent's position. Rush Limbaugh, David Limbaugh, Ann Coulter are practitioners of this type of rhetoric. Clearly Kyle Anne Shivers' opinion called "About betrayal" is full of straw-man arguments. Since the Southeast Missourian only prints conservative opinions, with the exception of Gene Lyons, please print those that are thoughtful and worth reading.

Let Uncle Sam pay

LET'S GO for it. If we can get some federal goodies in the form of a federal grant large enough, we can refurbish and reopen the Broadway and Esquire theaters and not lose any money, even if no one shows.

Efficient dispatchers

IN REFERENCE to the recent shooting: People who have bad things to say about dispatchers should understand how things work. These people work every day, understaffed, and do an exceptional job. People who slam dispatchers for being too busy to handle calls properly do not realize the volume of the work they do. During the recent shootings there was a fatal car crash at the same time. There were hundreds of 911 calls to report the accident, all of which had to be handled, most of the time by one person.
