Flying flag

WHEN flying Old Glory, be it horizontal or vertical, remember the star cluster always goes to the upper left as you face the flag.

Inconclusive results

HERE is the indisputable, unchallengeable answer. Does a school dress code improve academic achievement? The results are inconclusive.

Bad behavior

IN regard to the "lady" who spat on the veteran at a local gas station: That should be a federal offense. I am appalled that anyone would treat a veteran in that manner, especially in front of her child. I pray that social committees such as the VFW will intervene on this man's behalf.

Signs, red lights

THE Cape Girardeau City Council is worried about lawbreaking temporary signs being in the public's way. What about all the people running stop signs and red lights? This week I have seen two police cruisers doing nothing at intersections as several lawbreakers run red lights. I guess it is easier to remove signs because they don't talk back.

Political cartoon

CHEAP shot. I think the Friday editorial cartoon was a cheap shot at Jackson. Some land owners of that area came to Jackson asking to be annexed. Jackson did not ask to take in that area.

Distracted driver

I was on my way to work the other day, got off the interstate at Route K, and there was a car stopped at the top of the ramp. I kept waiting for the car to move, but it didn't. I slowly drove around the car and a woman was sitting there painting her fingernails.

Urban hunting

I am a Cape Girardeau resident who not only supports the bow hunting of deer in the Cape Girardeau city limits, but I will pay somebody to bow hunt on my property for the cost of replacing all the trees, shrubs and flowers they have eaten or destroyed. It's worth it.

Thrift shop

I was just curious of why our Teen Challenge thrift shop was not mentioned in the article promoting the thrift shops in Cape Girardeau. We are a not-for-profit organization and the money we raise helps keep the doors of our Teen Challenge center open. There are currently 150 men in the program whose lives have been changed, and this would not be possible without the thrift shop. Some come in with only the pair of jeans they have on. They have no shoes, no other clothing. We take them in, minister to them, clean them up, pray with them and God really makes productive citizens out of most of them.

Rodent problem

IN regard to the Cape Girardeau School District rodent problem: The school board knows about it. Since the construction work during the summer -- when the doors were left open -- many of the buildings have a problem. Traps have been put out all year. One classroom has had 19 mice caught in traps. Time to step it up a notch.

Quayle endorsement

I now think Mitt Romney has the Republican nomination for the presidency all wrapped up since he has been endorsed by Dan Quayle.
