Cardinal patriotism

I THINK those who oppose spending state revenue to salvage the St. Louis Cardinals border on being downright un-American. I mean, we're talking motherhood and apple pie.

Parents: Get involved

I AM a stay-at-home mom. I have worked outside the home before, and my older kids turned out just fine. That is because I was involved in their lives and tried to teach them right from wrong. I was there for them. The parents who work can still be involved in their children's lives, but they want time for themselves. You had these wonderful kids, now get involved in their lives. They need you.

Ill-focused war

ANOTHER CHILD'S future ruined as a casualty of an ill-focused drug war, close to home. This one, 17 years old in Jackson, faces a maximum sentence three times what most rapists actually receive. Sure, he'll probably get probation, but his record is permanently marred. Can his parents afford his tuition for college, which the government will now refuse to assist with? When are the American people going to speak out against this tragedy? Maybe when it's your son or daughter?

15 minutes of fame

SPEAK OUT callers should quit griping about David Limbaugh's being on a TV talk show. Any of us would unhesitatingly adopt a radical right-wing political philosophy if we knew we could get on the tube.

Proud of Lady Bulldogs

I WOULD like to add my congratulations to the Notre Dame Lady Bulldogs for their outstanding season and their win in Columbia, Mo. In addition, I would like to congratulate the Notre Dame supporting group who won the sportsmanship award. There were no comments of "airball" or other derisive statements from the stands, only positive support for their team. You make us proud.

Milking the taxpayers

WHAT'S WRONG with this picture? The Capital Research Center found that 31 so-called not-for-profit organizations that are lobbying against the Bush tax cut have received more than $400 million in federal tax money in the past five years. It's not surprising that groups such as the National Organization for Women, teachers' unions and other liberal groups would oppose tax cuts, because American taxpayers are one of their major sources of income.

Tax campaign giving

CONCERNING THE current campaign-financing debate in Congress: Pass a law that would make all the funds raised by party election committees subject to income tax on the same rate schedule applied to individual citizens. The higher the contribution, the higher rate the committee must pay. Maybe we could pay off the debt.

For candidate or party?

I WOULD like to ask Democrats one question: Since you think Clinton and Gore are so great, would you have voted for them if they were Republicans? If your answer is no, you don't vote for the man. You only vote for the party. That's why our country is in such a big mess.

Cheap philosophy

UNLESS AN unhealthy, obsessive, compulsive disorder manifested by eight years of Clinton bashing qualifies you to write a book, David Limbaugh is not qualified to write on the former president. Shame on you, Southeast Missourian, for permitting only radical, right-wing propaganda on your editorial page. This journalistic philosophy cheapens your paper.

Big difference

THE SOUTHEAST Missourian accurately pointed out that mad cow and foot-and-mouth disease aren't the same. Mad cow kills people. Foot and mouth kills animals, ruins economies and destroys lives. Big difference.

Keep mouths shut

WHEN ARE the media ever going to learn to keep their mouths shut about how people can do things? I just heard on TV that you can get someone's identity for $20. They just advertised and told people how to do it. I wish they'd keep their mouths shut. The world would be better off.

Worth the penalties

I DISAGREE with the caller about the environment. Perhaps a police state would have cameras that would film you running a red light. That would be a police state to me. But the environment is important enough to keep clean for our children. Asthma is a terrible thing for a child to suffer, and we can prevent a dirty environment that can aggravate asthma. I don't think 40 years and fines of up to $25,000 per day are particularly harsh. If that's what the courts think it takes to keep clean air for future generations, then so be it.

A smooth ride

I HAD to attend a meeting in downtown Cape at my church. I took Broadway. It was wonderful. Such a smooth ride -- almost made me want to cruise Broadway like the kids do.

How about an IPO?

MAYBE THE owners of the Marquette Hotel need to sell shares in it to get the money to fix it up.
