What disturbs me is that one of the first things being cut is funding for education. There are much less important things the states could be cutting: pay to state employees, selling unused state property, pet projects that can easily wait, other less important activities. ...

Education cuts

THERE has been much news about recent budget cuts, and it disturbs me. I understand that states are having budget problems and that cuts are needed. What disturbs me is that one of the first things being cut is funding for education. There are much less important things the states could be cutting: pay to state employees, selling unused state property, pet projects that can easily wait, other less important activities. Those do not involve cutting our youths' chances to a good education. Call your state representative and state senator and tell them to give our youths their education and to make budget cuts elsewhere.

Fresh coffee

TO the person who made the comment about fresh coffee: Make it yourself. If you are not worried about the money, then donate it to something that really matters.

Shelter support

THE Shelter of Hope has been in my mind. It needs about $35,000 to finish the building on South Sprigg Street. How many churches have stepped up to offer any money? I thought Christian duties included "Love thy neighbor as thyself." Wouldn't that include the homeless? Or are your neighbors only those sitting next to you in church? Come on, Cape Girardeau. We can do better than this. Let's get this place open.

Positive program

CENTRAL High School's Preparing for Academic Success classes have been an unqualified positive program for motivating students to live up to their academic potential as I'm certain this year's MAP scores will reflect.

Oak Ridge winners

CONGRATULATIONS, Oak Ridge Bluejays, on a successful basketball season. You broke a school record, won the Woodland Tournament and played in the district championship game. The people of Oak Ridge are proud of you and wish seniors Garrett, Logan and Lauren good luck.
