First Family values

Yes, I wonder if Hillary Clinton still stands by her husband, Bill Clinton. When they were in the White House the first time, they were going to a meeting, and he said he was sick and tired of hearing about family values. I wonder if Hillary's still that way.

Double standard

I want to comment about a little bit of hypocrisy. It seems like when President Bush was the president and that Katrina hit New Orleans, the Democrats claimed he didn't go down and look it over, which he did. He did, but he didn't do it the first day. They even accused him that he broke the dikes and caused the flood. But now we've got a train wreck, where a lot of people were killed. You don't hear about President Obama going out there giving those people comfort.

Power hungry

Why do our politicians of both political parties have a craving for power? And then, after they get power, they have a craving for money in the form of bribes. And then they have a craving for college-age girls. Why is this? Why can't they just be satisfied with the things they have in life?

Pension frustration

Missouri House Speaker John Diehl said Thursday that he is resigning from the Legislature after acknowledging that he exchanged sexually charged text messages with a college student serving as a Capitol intern. Yes, and now he can take his lifelong pension.

Limbaugh, prosecutors

Talk about out of touch. David Limbaugh seems to be stunningly unaware of the common practice of prosecutors throwing everything and the kitchen sink against those who have been charged with crimes in the hope that something will stick. This makes me think that Mr. Limbaugh has become hopelessly ensconced in an ideological ivory tower, insulating him from the real world, sadly, forever.

Bad sponsor for kids

Shame on the City of Cape for allowing Soo Vape to be a sponsor of a little girls (9- to 10-years old) softball team! This will be their team name and printed across the backs of their shirts. What a horrible message this is sending to our youth. The city really needs to re-evaluate their team sponsorship policy.

Civil rights

Mark Hopkins mused in so many words in the Southeast Missourian that society cannot legislate the personal morality of individuals. Of course not. But it can go a long way toward getting individuals to act in what society considers the right way, even if it conflicts with an individual's moral code. For example, the Civil Rights Act of 1965 effectively prohibited what had been legal discrimination based on race by making it illegal and punishing those who defied the law. Society correctly allows people to believe whatever they want to believe but also correctly draws lines when it comes to allowing people to act on their beliefs in ways deemed wrong.

Sculpture garden

Thank you to the students that set up the sculpture garden at the corner of Sprigg and Broadway. It adds a nice touch.
