Nature and water

I HOPE that if Cape Girardeau gets a water park that it will use the example of the beach water park in Cincinnati. Combine nature with the water park. That's what makes that water park so lovely. It could be a tourist attraction. Even people from Farmington be willing to drive down.

Mosquito spraying

THANKS, CAPE Girardeau, for spraying for mosquitoes this year. In the past, Cape has only sprayed once or twice the whole summer. Already, they've sprayed three times for mosquitoes, and it's been wonderful to stand out in your yard and not have mosquitoes. Keep it up.

What's the answer?

THE CAPE Girardeau Municipal Band played the piece "Instant Concert" and challenged the audience to see how many pieces it could name. I counted 29, but the answer was never announced. I hope someone can tell me how many different pieces of music were in "Instant Concert."

Leash law

THERE IS is a leash law in Scott City. The dog that was hit by a car shouldn't have been in the street. It was the owner's responsibility to make sure this incident didn't happen. That's the law.

Higher insurance

I MOVED to the Cape Girardeau area less than a year ago from a larger city. When I moved here, my insurance rate increased. I called my insurance company and asked why. I was told me it was due to the fact that the area I had moved to had more automobile accidents than the area I moved from. I was shocked. Over the past year as I have driven through the Cape Girardeau and the Jackson area, I realize how irresponsible drivers are. You need to obey the rules of the road, use your signals and exercise caution when you turn in front of folks. You're raising insurance rates for the rest of us because of your irresponsible driving.

Beneficial tax

I THINK that a half-cent sales tax to fund the parks and storm-water projects in Cape Girardeau is a small price to pay for all the benefits we would get. Cape is a first-class city, a great place to live. Let's keep it that way. Get out the bandwagon to pass this tax. It's beneficial.

Against payroll tax

IN REGARD to a payroll tax for Cape Girardeau, I work in Cape Girardeau but live outside Cape Girardeau. I am appalled that the city would try to do this. All of us who live outside Cape Girardeau but work in Cape Girardeau contribute a large sum of money to the city in many ways. If this passes, I would no longer buy anything in Cape Girardeau.

Use the sidewalks

I THINK it's a good thing the city is building sidewalks. I see runners along the side of the road, but walkers who don't use sidewalks should be ticketed. Sidewalks should be used if they're being built.

Personal choice

DON'T PUSH your lifestyle on people. If you want to hang out your flag on Flag Day, go for it. I chose not to. I don't need someone trying to put some guilt trip on me.

Beautiful flags

I WOULD like to thank VFW Post 3838 in Cape Girardeau for putting out the avenue of flags at County Park. They were beautiful flying on Flag Day.

Tax relief

I RECENTLY received my notice that my property taxes will go up again. This happens to most property owners of Cape Girardeau County every two years. One time I protested being assessed for a basement, which I don't have. We need property-tax relief.

Community college

I THINK a community college would be a good idea. However, I do not think we need to create another taxing entity for a community college. Either Three Rivers Community College or Mineral Area Community College might bring an extension to town.

Have to move

I WOULD like to express my concern about the proposed sales-tax increase for Cape Girardeau. This is the last straw for me. My family has made arrangements to move in September from a city we have always loved. My family lives on a fixed income and barely gets by the way it is.

Raising taxes

DO NOT let Cape Girardeau approve a payroll tax. It might drop sales taxes now, but it would raise them later. There needs to be a stop to this.

Wonderful sight

ON FLAG Day, I drove by County Park. There were 500 flags. It reminded me of my freedom and what the flag stands for. I'd like to thank VFW Post 3838 for flying the beautiful flags. It was a wonderful sight.

Feed the bears

IT IS tragic when a human being is killed by a black bear. But when there is a drought and humans have destroyed most of their habitat, bears have to hunt for food, especially now when they have cubs. Why not drop food from helicopters miles away from human, if there is such a place anymore? The black bear and many animals are starving. It's only instinct to hunt for what they consider as food. Feed them far away and they won't look for food elsewhere.

Development erosion

I THINK storm-water drainage problems are caused by developers who strip the land of top soil, trees and wildlife habitat. Erosion is a natural thing. A little forethought can make a huge difference. If contractors are held accountable for their erosion, things would be a lot different.

Branson in Illinois

I SAY yes to a Branson-type park in Pinckneyville, Ill. I believe it would be a much-needed boost for Southern Illinois and would draw people from Chicago, Memphis, St. Louis, Iowa and Indiana. I will support any effort to make this a reality.

Natural beauty

WHAT A shame the VietNow organization is determined to destroy our beautiful Courthouse Park. Please don't destroy the natural beauty of that area. My husband was a veteran Marine during World War II. He would certainly be against destroying natural beauty to display granite slabs. Don't let this happen, please.

Monument sense

How ridiculous to spend $100,000 on another monument at Courthouse Park. I hope common sense prevails. Improve the park instead of erecting another monument to block the view. Just because we can't all be at the meeting to oppose the idea doesn't mean we don't oppose it. Why can't people see that upgrading the park in the name of veterans is a better idea than spending all that money on some concrete? If you could ask those vets whose memory we are to preserve, I bet they would agree that a living memorial such as planting trees would be a much better idea.

Thanks for credit card

I WANT to thank the man who found my Visa card in the Sears parking lot and turned it in. I appreciate it very much.

Speaking English

If people come here and resist learning English, they are segregating themselves from the larger community, which is a disservice to all concerned.
