We're not quitters

IRAQ IS not Vietnam, so take off the peace signs, take a deep breath and realize that just because your generation quit a war doesn't mean that ours will.

Outrageous rents

I AM ashamed to live in this area. I have been looking for a rental house around Cape Girardeau. The rent is outrageous. Landlords ought to be ashamed. There's one thing I know. God will ask you each some day in the very near future how you represented him here on earth. What will you say?

Justice system

LET ME get this straight. They let that murder suspect from Sikeston roam the streets, and they locked those Navy boys up just like that. Wow! Great justice system.

No comparison

THIS IS a rebuttal to the Vietnam vet who said he agreed with 17- and 18-year-olds drinking alcohol to celebrate milestones, since they are the ones who get sent off to fight wars. I too am a veteran of foreign wars. I partially agree with him but also disagree. Don't compare high school students to our military brothers. Until these kids make the same brave decisions and sacrifices all our military men and women make, they do not deserve to be put in the same breathe that away. I agree military personnel should be afforded that privilege of drinking before 21 as a reward for service, but not a high school student.

Troop strength

A RECENT comment said we have an obvious troop deficit because of the war in Iraq. Really? Only 37 percent of all Marines and just 45 percent of all active Army forces have deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan.

Wait and see

A COMMENT said we could learn from the French since they "plan" to deport 25,000 illegal aliens this year. I say let's wait to see if they can actually do it. There's a huge difference between what politicians say they will do and what they actually do.

Increasing fees

CONGRATULATIONS, Cape Girardeau residents. You got what you asked for when you voted to allow the city council to raise fees without resident input or vote. Now our water, sewer and trash bills are going up and will most likely go up at least once per year from now on.

Paying for incompetence

IT HAS been determined that it was AmerenUE's negligence of raising the water detection probes too high to operate correctly that caused the Taum Sauk flood disaster. Of course, Ameren was allowed to increase utility rates so we pay for their incompetence.

Taking out Iran

THE IRAQI people feared Saddam Hussein, and they'll tell you they're glad the United States took Saddam Hussein out. But they'll also tell you they're not scared of the United States. We made a terrible mistake by taking Saddam Hussein out. He was against terror and kept Iran in check. I think we should have let Saddam Hussein take Iran out.

Safe drinking

I'M 45 years old. My wife is 42. When our son was in high school in his senior year, some of the boys he hung around with were drinking, too. On several occasions we let those boys come to our house. They all spent the night. We let them drink. We took their keys. Almost all of their parents knew they were at our house and they knew there would be beer, and they didn't have a problem with it. Some of them thanked us. I would have rather had my son and his friends drinking in our basement in a safe environment than having them out on a county road getting drunk and driving home that night and not make it.
