The love of a woman

I HAVE a question. Are there no unattached middle-aged men in southeast Missouri who care more about what a person is like inside and how they treat a man rather than looking like a model, especially when they themselves are no Tom Selleck? I have not found this to be true. Don't they know that beauty doesn't last, but a loving, kind-hearted woman will?

What has he done?

IN READING Speak Out and talking to people about Clinton, they talk about what a great job he's done. In my experience where I've asked people to name things that he's done, they can't do it. They say, "Well, things." I say "What things?" "Uh, you know." They can't say what things. He hasn't done very much. If you take out what Congress has passed and he has signed instead of vetoing, he hasn't done very much for the country. He's had very little influence on things. So people are going for a lot of hype that the Democratic Party's putting out about what a good job he's done. It's just a lot of baloney.

Leave him alone

THIS IS ridiculous. The polls tell us people want to let President Clinton do his job. But the Republican Party and the extreme right wing are persistent in playing politics and bringing out a sex scandal. They want to bring out more tapes. They want us to get angry with the president. They want to rub our noses in it. They want us to do something about it. It sounds to me they're angry at us because we're not angry and want him ousted out of office. We hate what he did, but we love the job he's doing. Why can't they leave well enough alone? Or are they getting in so deep they're embarrassed they can't stop now? Their word is they can't let polls guide them, they've got to do their job. I guess their pride's going to tell them that when there's a Democratic landslide and the Democratic Party takes the House and possibly the Senate back again. Get it out of your head. There's no way we're going to have a Republican House and Republican Congress. We're not that big of a fool. We do not want to have soup kitchens, and we do not want to stand in bread lines and unemployment lines. We like the way the economy is. Clinton's doing a good job. Leave him alone.

Stop trashing others

IT IS very true that the pope forgave the man who shot him and even goes to the jail now to visit him. But the man is also serving his time in jail for the shooting. Bill Clinton should resign the presidency. Stop trashing others and let us try to restore to our innocent children what we want to teach them.

Equal treatment

I WOULD like to say this to all the yellow-dog, die-hard Democrats and anyone else who is upholding Bill Clinton and what he has done to the White House and the people of this country. Now you all might recall that Lt. Flynn was discharged from the Air Force for the very same thing. And do you all remember Bob Packwood? And most of all, do you all remember Richard Nixon? Who was partisan then? I have heard people degrade President Reagan because he could not remember certain things, and now we have a man who's doing the same thing, but you hear nothing said about that. I feel that Lt. Flynn should be reinstated in the Air Force with full rank and back pay if this man goes scot-free.

Warm story of love

HOW REFRESHING it was to watching the movie "Forever Love" on CBS Sunday evening. There was no sex, violence or profanity, just a warm, human story of love and devotion.

Not a moral leader

THESE PEOPLE who back Clinton have to distort the truth, make excuses or just lie. So you can support and praise him. I can understand why no moral crowd goes along with this. But when some of my church patrons say it's all Mr. Starr's fault, Monica's a tramp, the Republicans are behind it, it's no one's business, if his wife doesn't care I don't, Linda Tripp is a Judas, everyone does it, they are all corrupt, forgive him, let's move on, it was a lack of judgment, I say forgive his sins but he should not continue to be the moral leader of our country. No one in this high office ever did such a vulgar act. This is just not an affair as Mr. Clinton states. It went on seven or eight months, letting people get blasted when he knew the truth. I was appalled when Mr. Nixon lied and covered up, and I agreed with his resignation. But no one can compare with the deceit and lack of morality or the filth and disgrace Clinton has put on this nation.

Congress, do your duty

THANKS TO Speak Out we can still express our opinions. I'm sure free speech is still allowed in this country and that Nazi clampdowns are not tolerated. Congress, do your constitutional duty and remove this crafty, wily, sex addict, lying Clinton from our White House. We deplore him. He forfeited that office when he lied under oath three times: in the Jones deposition, before the grand jury and when he took oath of office in January 1996. He has misled the American people and admits it and no longer deserves to be our president. Congress, impeach this deceitful Clinton. We deplore him.

Reward the recyclers

I WOULD like to know when the Cape Girardeau City Council is going to start rewarding the people who are doing the recycling. Since we started recycling, we don't have hardly any trash at all to be picked every week, and this is unfair to the people who are recycling. Something ought to be figured out to where they charge the people more for the amount of garbage they pick up and less for the small amounts. And I also think the city should educate some of its own employees to the tune of recycling. I know several who recycle nothing. Everything goes in the trash. It's time to look into some way of rewarding the ones who recycle. That would give the ones who are not recycling reason to recycle. I am tired of the City Council raising the rates, water rates, water usage, trash, $13 a month. It is exactly too much to charge for no more trash than some people have.

They need jobs

DR. NITZSCHKE, you are wasting our hard-earned tax dollars. The problem in Pemiscot and Mississippi counties is simple. Those people need to pick up and move to where the jobs are. You can't put food on the table by offering them after-school recreation programs, tutoring and family services. What they need are jobs -- jobs that aren't available in those oppressed counties. A bus ticket out of there would be a better way to spend our tax dollars.

A wayward nation

THE CHRISTIANS and the conservatives who think America will soon wake up and denounce this disgrace we have in the White House are dreaming. Three-quarters of the people of this country have lost their morality or don't care. Half of the professed Christians have forgotten their faith and duty to God. We worship celebrities, politicians, sports figures. America leads the world with the most crime, sex perversion, murder, divorce, dope addictions. Soddom and Gomorrah, move over.

Sinking to new low

I'D JUST like to comment that the Southeast Missourian has reached a new low, and I'm so surprised that there was no pedestal beneath the name of Carol Poole. Maybe an illustration of a man or woman with a prayer below it saying such as "There but for the grace of God go I and you." Is Mrs. Poole saying that the illustration of all that she wrote was done by the president? I'm not sure exactly what she's saying. But I just think that you could have used a better choice than to print all of this.

Where's the proof?

I WOULD like to make a comment on the Monday opinion page. I'd like to know who this Carol Poole is from Jackson, and I would like for her to have some proof about all of this stuff about President Clinton. This has gone way too far. I am surprised that the Southeast Missourian would print something like that.

Public standards

WHAT HAPPENED to "appearance of impropriety" as a standard for trying to remove someone from office? Or was that only for Republicans? It seems our president can be in the gutter and still clear the public standards bar. Sad.

Exorbitant fee

I'D LIKE to tell you why people are going outside of Cape for their doctor. I went to a specialist not long ago. True, it was my first visit. There was no lab work, no X-rays and the visit didn't last over 15 minutes. I was charged $200. I consider that exorbitant.

Control production

TO THE farmers in the area I'd like to say, as far as the prices go, you got what you deserve. You're Freedom to Farm Bill was really a freedom to fail bill. The Republican Congress that got the bill for you was your biggest enemy. Production control is really the only way to get the farm economy turned around. If you think that the Freedom to Farm Bill is what you want, then you deserve it and the financial stress that it has caused. Several times a week you see stories on TV and in the papers that a fourth to half of the farmers will go bankrupt in the next year because of the Freedom to Farm Bill and the prices it has caused. You'd better get your head straightened out and vote for only the people who will give you price guarantees and production controls. If you are losing $1 a bushel on everything you produce, you can't make it up in volume. Don't you understand? The government doesn't have to support you. All they've got to do is control you a little bit so you don't go out there and produce enough to make yourself starve to death.

Is all that true?

THANK YOU, Mrs. Poole, for writing the letter about the mysterious deaths surrounding President Clinton, and thanks to the Missourian for printing it. Now, the Southeast Missourian has a responsibility. You have stepped knee deep into a great conspiracy theory. Are you sure of your facts? I think you have a responsibility with your readers after printing that to go back and check and see are there really death certificates for all these people. Are all these rumors true? Did these things really happen? It's going to take quite a bit of investigation, but somebody ought to do it. The big news media ought to do it, but you've printed it, and now you need to do it. We need to know the truth.
