Newt coverts a Democrat

I VOTED a straight Republican ticket for the past 80 years, but after this Newt Gingrich thing, I'm voting straight Democrat from here on out.

For capital punishment

I WOULD like to really give Prosecuting Attorney Morley Swingle a thumbs up on his decision to quit the American Bar Association because of its stand on capital punishment. Like Mr. Swingle said, it has both lawyers opposed and for. The ABA should be neutral. I am a bleeding heart for the victims, and believe you me I'll consider this the next time I vote. He has my vote. I'm a liberal and I'm a Democrat, but I'm for capital punishment. I'm for the side of the victim.

Deductions for children

I'D JUST like to ask a question of the people out there -- Republican, Democrat and otherwise -- who voted for Clinton. Now that tax time is here and you see how much you're getting penalized when you don't have children, are you happy that you voted for him? Or are you starting to regret that because you don't have children even if you have the same income as last year you're getting a lot less back this year federal than last year?

Scott City should be proud

THIS IS to the Scott City Police Department. I want to tell you how proud you should be of your Officer Emstemacher. He came to the rescue of three ladies Friday evening about 9:15 out on the interstate. We really appreciated his help and his politeness. Scott City, you should be proud.

Won't tell the truth

ANYBODY WHO believes anything a president has to say about the state of the union is totally naive. Do you think for one minute a president who is in office is going to tell you that our country is in a sad state of affairs?

Teaching is a good job

IN MY opinion, a teacher's job is one of the most important in the world outside of just simply being a mother -- a good mother, of course. However, to have a teaching job is to have a pretty good job. After all, it's a five-day work week with a three-month vacation. If anybody tells me those teachers are always back in school, getting their Ph.D. or getting this or getting that, going to seminars and that sort of thing -- those teachers are doing that for themselves. Not for the public, not for the children, but for themselves in order for them to be able to make more money or hold better positions. It's as simple as that.

Justice after all

O.J. SIMPSON thought he's got away with murder, but now they've found him liable for the deaths of Ron Goldman and Nicole Simpson. Yes, there is justice after all. Praise the Lord.

No cars sales on lots

IT IS obvious that the Jackson City Council has buckled under to pressure by taking action to prohibit individuals from selling automobiles on private lots. First of all, how can the City Council tell you what to do on a private lot? No. 2, do these car lots or dealers understand that it is the taxpayers who pave the street, who provide the parking lot and there's nothing wrong if a taxpaying individual wants to put their car or any other individual on a lot which is not being used to advertise for the purpose of sale? Then they bring up that out-of-town people are placing their vehicles there. How many of the car dealers would turn a sale down from out of town? Also do they realize that out of town folks come into Jackson, spend money and take part in sales tax which provides revenue to the city? Residents of the city of Jackson, I urge you call your council member and your mayor and voice discontent.

Return of Big Government

I HAVE a comment to make about the State of the Union speech. Last year, Clinton said the era of big government is over. If you listened to the speech, he wants to enlarge the government, put federal controls completely over schools, make people past tests, put more money to the teachers unions, give them more money. Now they've come out where they're going to cut Medicare. Remember when the Republicans were crucified for saying these things? Well, the people who voted for Clinton now see he's talking about more big government. Now we've gutted the military, and we're going to put this money into social programs. What's going to happen if we need an army? I wonder how many Clinton people, soccer moms, and older people will go sign up to go because they're going to be the only ones. People like me would never go, and I did three tours in 'Nam.

Tired of all the lies

IT'S OVER. The fat lady has sung. Let the Simpson-Goldman opera end. Most of us are sick of the lies, "I didn't do it" from Simpson and "It's not for the money" from Goldman. Let it die.

Street sweeper and taxes

THE STREET cleaner finally came down our street yesterday after three weeks of having the sand on our pavement. He made one round down and one up and that was it. We've got half of the sand still on our street. If we paid our taxes the way they clean up this street, they'd be after us before we got out the door.

Curbs and sidewalks

GLAD TO see in the paper where the city is starting to fix the curbs and gutters and sidewalks. I hope they do not stop here. Just keep on going.
