Who cares about Mars?

SO THERE may be life on Mars. I would like to ask: Who in the heck cares? But I suppose our government will spend trillions of dollars trying to find out more about it. Only in America, folks. What a country.

Bible is source of laws

TO THE "Freedom of Religion" caller: Not to destroy his beliefs or anything, but the Bible is the basis of most of our laws. So realistically, it is the law of our land.

No better off now

WELFARE WAS mostly created for the elderly, the handicapped and widowed with children until they could fend for themselves and people who temporarily fell on hard times. It wasn't meant to create a class of people who lived off welfare for generations -- that's cruelty. And it wasn't meant to turn our country into a socialist state, which it has. Show me how the American people are better off after all these years of ever-growing welfare benefits.

Make owners clean up properties

I WOULD like to know why the city doesn't do something about the Marquette Hotel on Broadway, and there's a house on North Main Street that something needs to be done with. And don't let the city tell us that there isn't anything they can do about it, because they can. Somebody owns these properties, and there is nothing stopping the city from making these owners clean this mess up. This house on North Main Street has windows that are broken out of it, part of the roof is blown off and weeds and vines are growing into the house through the windows. Please, somebody, take a look at this house. The people in the northeast section of Cape Girardeau pay taxes the same as anyone else. I'd also like the city street department superintendent to come up on Mill Street by Spanish Street and see if the city could do something with this section of concrete. It needs to be overlaid with blacktop. Mill Street is busted all to pieces, and something needs to be done.

No confusion on use tax

MY HUSBAND and I weren't confused by the use tax. We knew exactly what we were voting for. We get pretty tired when the vote doesn't go the way the politicians want it and then politicians say average citizens didn't understand it. I, for one, know that businesses that have to pay the tax will pass that tax on to the general public. I knew exactly what I was voting for. I don't want to have to purchase quality merchandise at a higher price just because the corporation doesn't want the tax.

Time for fresh doughnuts

VOTERS of Scott County, you people never cease to amaze me. How sad it must be to have your mind so easily manipulated by all the rhetoric, sugar-coating and smoke screens thrown at you by certain candidates. The analogy of several thousand lambs headed for the slaughter comes to my mind. You really need to find out the personal backgrounds of your candidates before you blindly elect or re-elect them. The signs are there. Wake up and smell the doughnuts, people. They're stale, and it's time for a change.

Voters weren't confused

GUESS WHAT, Gerald Jones. Most of us taxpayers are not as stupid as you think we are. We were not confused, as you thought. Aren't we allowed to have a brain and think for ourselves? Just because you're the presiding commissioner doesn't mean you know everything.

When less is more

THE REPUBLICANS must have come up with a new system of math. I can't seem to figure it out. How does less of anything add up to much of anything?

The old fork test

IF BOB Dole's new strategy is to try to turn this election into an election for vice president, Bob can't win the election. By accepting, Jack Kemp is ruining his credibility and probably his political career. Are the Republicans going to support Connie Mack, an admitted pot smoker who did inhale? Or does Bob Dole think he can win Michigan, a perennial Democratic stronghold? No matter what Bob Dole does, it doesn't matter. Stick a fork in him. He's done.

How many are middle-class?

HOW CAN Bob Dole say that his economic plan will benefit the middle class when it no longer exists as he once knew it. In his comprehension of reality, he thinks the middle class income is $60,000 to $100,000. By this standard, how many middle-class people live in Southeast Missouri?

Dinosaur or fossil

HOW CAN the Republicans resort to name-calling using names like dinosaur when their own candidate can be classified as a fossil?
