THIS IS about the geography lesson about Heidi Nieland's column Sept. 11. The person called talked about the Dukes of Hazzard set in Hazzard County, Ga. Well, that is correct, there is no Hazzard County, Ga. It's made up. But there is a Sparta, Ga. but it is not in Hazzard County, Ken. They've made this up, Hazzard County, Ga. That's where the show was based out of, Hazzard County, Ga. So the other caller is wrong for condemning her for what she said...

Heidi was right

Where's the vote?

I'M JUST calling to thank all the city council members for approving a 5 percent tax increase without informing the voters of Scott City. People of Scott City used to have the right to vote whether they wanted a tax increase or not. But since the city council members have all become one big family down there, it seems like they have more say than the taxpayers of Scott City. Also I'd like to say something about one of the council members that said the city shouldn't have to pay for sewer backups in people's homes. There was a lady in Scott City that the sewer did back up in her home and this one certain council member said the city shouldn't be responsible to pay for that sewer backup.

Unions went too far

FOR THE last several years I have heard stories about the Illinois unions and their corrupt and brutal methods in dealing with out of state contractors and construction workers. Expensive property damage and even assaults on the workers have been tolerated and over looked. Now they're being further rewarded by punishing Danny Gilder by trying to protect his property and employees. I think it's high time some higher authority, not from the state of Illinois, investigated the Illinois unions. They've gone too far this time.

Offer is a bribe

THE ARTICLE in Monday's paper about this guy trying to open a bar near the two churches, this Hammond man. I can't believe his audacity to tell them he will donate some of his money to recreational programs at the two churches. That's bribery. That's nothing other than bribery and if those churches have any of the Bible in them at all or any kind of a backbone, they will tell this guy to get lost. They shouldn't be accepting money from the sale of liquor and stuff like that to fund their churches. No where in the Bible will you see that Jesus got out and sold liquor to fund a church.

What about children's rights?

FOSTER CHILDREN should be given the right to say whether or not they want to see the parent who abused or neglected them. Parents who abuse or neglect are given too many rights. The children are the ones who suffer.

Where's the party?

THE REPUBLICAN candidate that won the primary election, the man who won, for the seat of the late Congressman Bill Emerson in the Eight District. He won the primary, he should be the Republican candidate. The Republican Party really has an obligation, I feel, to back him up. That's just like the Democratic Party supporting Jo Ann Emerson or supporting the Republican candidate. I think something's crooked in Denmark and I hope it sways the voters when they go to the polls when they consider voting for Jo Ann Emerson. I certainly feel it's like Evita Peron. The only qualifications she has is being married to the Congressman.

Sloppy work

WOULD SOMEONE please explain to us why the sloppy, terrible job of supposedly overlay on Perry Avenue and Lexington should be paid for by the city of Cape Girardeau? This has got to be the sloppiest job I've ever seen. Who okayed it and why?

Change the signal

IS THERE any reason why the light at Toys R Us cannot be made automatic instead of timed? It seems like a waste of people's time and energy to have to sit for a light when there's not cars coming from either direction.

Rock and roll will never die

IN HEIDI Nieland's story on converting from rock and roll to country, me being a normal U.S. male, it would take more than someone's sleek caboose to change me to country. I'm dyed in the wool rock and roll. For me to go to country, you'd have to pull that rock and roll CD out of my cold, dead hand. And I think Heidi has a great column.

What happens to the merchandise?

I GO to the Salvation Army Thrift Store a lot and I have noticed that in the past few months that the clothes that are brought there very seldom reach the sales floor and that they are left outside or are in the basement thing and loaded onto big trucks and hauled away. If you see something out there, they will not let you buy it because they are going to throw it away. I feel that people on limited income who have to shop there should at least be allowed the privilege of being able to buy stuff instead of it being thrown away in a dump or sold at a salvage yard in St. Louis for money.

Reconsider nurse decision

I DO not agree with the decision that was made by the Cape School Board as far as hiring LPNs. I believe they should be RNs in every building. I believe the school is putting a price to health care on our children's lives, initially. There are children in those buildings who can have and who have life threatening diseases and life threatening accidents will happen at those schools and if they do not get the adequate medical attention that they need at that time, minutes could be their lives. And I think the school board had better step back and realize that they are playing with our children's lives and I as a community person am not willing to accept this. This school board has to realize spending money on tracks, money on everything does not come before the health of our children. Community, please unite, call the board, tell them what you think. There's no reason why we should have to stand for sub optimal medical attention for our school children when we live in the health thriving community that we live in. Please get behind us and call the school board, tell them that we want RNs. This needs to be looked at again, this needs to be reviewed.

Special delivery

I WAS just calling to say that I think it's really interesting, when the lady mail carrier comes, she leaves my Victoria's Secret package in the package holder on the mailbox and when the male mail carrier comes, he knocks on the door to make sure I get my package safe and sound.

Debate switch

I'M A Republican who will be switching my vote from Dole to Perot. I will also be voting against Emerson, Kinder and some of the other Republican candidates. I've made this decision because of Perot being excluded from the debates. The Republican Party must have a bad case of the stupidity disease.

Where's the debate?

I'D LIKE to see Clinton and Dole get out of this one now. Ross Perot is speaking in San Francisco and has been since around 2:30 and Bill Clinton and Bob Dole were all invited to debate there in San Francisco at that hotel. My eyes are not too good, but I want to hear Clinton's and Dole's excuses for not debating Ross Perot when all three of them have been invited.

No seat belt

IF YOU watch the Emily Firebaugh commercial, you'll notice she's driving along without a seat belt on. Draw your own conclusion.

Republican loyalty

WELL, THE Republicans are loyal to their tribe. Remember when Nixon got in trouble, here comes the tribe. And the sacrificed Vice President Agnew, he was in trouble also but he had to go. They thought would save Nixon but that backfired. Then we had Carter and Reagan and you all know how they got rid of Carter. They promised Iran guns and ammunition with they would hold the hostages over there, they would send them guns to shoot us with. Now here they go again on dirty tricks against a fine man, Bill Clinton. But it won't work this time. They can't hurt Agnew anymore, he's gone now. They're dangerous. Get out this fall and exercise your privilege and vote for Bill Clinton.

Good showing

THUMBS UP and accolades to the Jackson Junior High School Christian students who stood their ground and stood for their Lord when other students stood and cursed obscenities and jeered and made fun of them for their faith. God bless them.
