I'VE JUST been discouraged about recycling in Cape Girardeau. I put out my recycling and a rain storm came. They refused to pick up the newspapers because they said the newspapers were wet. Well, of course, they were wet. It rained on them. It hadn't rained on them before I put them out. I am now taking my newspapers and putting them in the garbage so they can be picked up...

Recycling dampened

I'VE JUST been discouraged about recycling in Cape Girardeau. I put out my recycling and a rain storm came. They refused to pick up the newspapers because they said the newspapers were wet. Well, of course, they were wet. It rained on them. It hadn't rained on them before I put them out. I am now taking my newspapers and putting them in the garbage so they can be picked up.

Where's the money?

WHERE DID all the money Union Electric stockholders received when they operated the Cape waterworks go?

REPLY: At the time of the sale in 1992, a Union Electric representative said that although the water system wasn't losing money, it hadn't been particularly profitable. Union Electric advised the city in 1984 that it intended to sell the water system and would give the city the first opportunity to purchase it. Cape Girardeau voters approved the sale in the fall of 1991.

GOP plow ahead

THE REPUBLICAN attitude is to go on with their vows and their budget, regardless of what the people may think. If it's the wrong thing, then they'll just take the heat. What an attitude. I wish it was that simple. They make the wrong vote and say override the president's veto. The poor, the working people, the elderly on fixed incomes are going to have live with their mistakes.

Play day decisions

THIS IS to the concerned people who are so worried about a play day. Can't you trust the school where you send your kids to? I don't think there should be any voting to it. What's play day for anyway? Kids or parents?

Cartoon comment

I'M CALLING in reference to a comment published May 16 entitled "Offensive cartoon." Whoever called that in needs a reality check. I know that the Oklahoma bombing was a very tragic thing, but to blame a cartoon for making fun of it. Get real. The cartoon is most likely pointing out that access to information like that is easy to obtain and that we need to do something about. But I don't think the cartoon was meant to poke fun at the tragedy in Oklahoma City.

Water rate hike

THE CITY is going to increase our water rates another three percent. This is supposed to be to pay for putting water lines into these new developments. Why should poor people have to pay for water lines to these people who are building these $250,000 to $500,000 homes? If they can afford those kinds of homes, they can surely afford to run the water line to these homes. This is unfair to the people who live in modest homes to have to pay for these big wigs.

No golf support

I USE city water and sewers. I do not mind paying for them. I do not use the golf course. I resent the fact that the city will subsidize them $45,000 in the next year. According to your Wednesday paper, everything is self-supporting but the golf course. If it cannot be self-supporting, let's do away with it. Enough is enough.
