Support for cancer research

On Monday, a candidate for Congress from the 8th District attacked Jo Ann Emerson for donating $218.50 to Debbie Wasserman-Schultz. In fact, Emerson did donate money to Wasserman-Schultz, a breast cancer survivor. The donation was a reimbursement for expenses incurred as part of the bipartisan congressional women's softball game, a fundraiser for breast cancer research in which Emerson participates each year.

The writer would be wise to gather all relevant information next time he chooses to launch an attack. Mistakes happen, but due diligence might have saved him the embarrassment of having attacked Emerson for supporting research into breast cancer, a disease that will be newly diagnosed in more than 207,000 Americans this year alone.

For supporting much-needed research and her colleague, a mother of three who is winning the fight against this devastating disease, Emerson should be proud. The fact that this letter was needed is truly unfortunate.
