Iliana and Austin. Remember these two names. Chances are you will be hearing much more about them in the years to come.
Iliana Arevalo, born with hip dysplasia, has had two major surgeries at the Shriners Hospital for Children in St. Louis, one of 22 hospitals across the country that provide free treatment for children with orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal-cord injuries and other conditions.
Last year, Iliana met Austin Keillor at Cape Bible Chapel, and they became good friends. Austin was with Iliana's family during her last surgical procedure, so both 13-year-olds are familiar with the Shriners hospital and the youngsters who receive treatment there.
During Iliana's last surgery, Austin and Iliana's parents discussed how they could help patients at the hospital. They came up with the idea for a pledge walk to raise money. Austin and Iliana organized the walk at a Jackson park in early December. Iliana, still recovering, was able to go a quarter-mile. Austin kept walking, going 12 miles in all.
With more than $500 raised during the walk, Iliana and Austin purchased games, toys, magic tricks, and makeup kits for teenage girls for patients at the Shriners hospital.
Iliana and Austin saw a need. Instead of talking about it or wishing someone else would do something, they went to work and did what they hoped would bring smiles to the faces of youngsters in the hospital. Hats off to both of them for their kindness and consideration. They both are living up to the Bible verse inscribed on necklaces they wear: Philippians 4:13: I can do everything through Christ who strengthens me.
