Cape Girardeau County Court receives a check in the amount of $690.51 as its first reimbursement from the Missouri Tax Commission for reassessment work; Cape Girardeau County is one of three counties which received the first reimbursements made by the commission this year, as part of $15 million the commission intends to spend on reimbursing reassessment work in Missouri counties.

Cape Girardeau County Nursing Service will begin moving into its new headquarters in the old Cape Girardeau Public Library building tomorrow, says Carolyn Sarff of the nursing service; the service will also move out of its downtown Cape Girardeau office in Rivertown Mall on Wednesday and into the old library building.

50 years ago: Jan. 26, 1956

State College officials, elated over passage Tuesday of the statewide bond issue, foresee possible start of construction this year on a new science building and perhaps other new structures long needed on the campus.

Three new executive board members, each to serve a three-year term, are elected by the Cape Girardeau Community Theater; named to the board are Mrs. Milburn Metje, Paul Loiseau and Jack Fuerth; they replace Bertie Cleino, John A. Rauh and Gladys Lesem.

75 years ago: Jan. 26, 1931

Construction has begun on a brick dwelling for Charles Wulfers on Themis Street, just east of North Henderson Avenue; the building will have five rooms and will be completed in the early spring.

H.S. Stokes of Rolla, Mo., has purchased the George Drug Store at the corner of Main Street and Broadway from Homer George, who operated it about six months; it was formerly the Dalton Drug Store; Stokes has been in the drug business for some years; he and his wife have moved to Cape Girardeau and are residing on South Spanish Street.

100 years ago: Jan. 26, 1906

The Women's Relief Corps will observe William McKinley's birthday Saturday and Monday by selling the beloved president's favorite flower, carnations; the ladies will sell flowers at the Hinchey-Greer store on Main Street, at Clara Bader's millinery on Spanish Street, and at Nussbaum & Stehr's in Haarig.

The river gauge at Cape Girardeau stands at 17 1/2 feet; the river continues to rise slowly, and considerable ice is coming down from the north.
