The congregation of Cape Bible Chapel dedicates its new building; a message of encouragement is given by John McCallum of Chicago, and the guest speaker is George Nelson, a Christian businessman of St. Louis; the new facility is about 14,000 square feet.

The New Testament Christian Church has adopted a new name: Mount Auburn Christian Church; the church meets at 930 Mount Auburn Road.

50 years ago: Jan. 29, 1959

A delegation of Jackson residents calls on the County Court seeking information on the transfer of a half-interest in the Common Pleas Courthouse to the county by the city of Cape Girardeau; the exchange would give the county numerous advantages it never had before in occupying two-thirds of the building.

A water rate increase is approved for Missouri Utilities Co. by the Missouri Public Service Commission and will be reflected bills received in April; the increase will bring in $105,400 annually for the company.

75 years ago: Jan. 29, 1934

Dropping 56 degrees in 24 hours, the mercury slides down to 8 degrees in Cape Girardeau with a cold front that rode out of the north yesterday; between 40 and 50 transients who were in Cape Girardeau when the cold wave struck were sent scurrying to proffered shelters at the Salvation Army barracks and the basement of police headquarters.

Blowing a small steel safe in the Cape Girardeau Public Library either Saturday or Sunday night, yeggmen took about $42 but overlooked another $47; the burglars used nitroglycerin to blow open the safe door.

100 years ago: Jan. 29, 1909

The biggest event at Cape Girardeau's booster week is scheduled for tomorrow night, when the Southeast Missouri Press Association will be entertained at a concert in the Elks Club; E.G. Lewis, the prominent St. Louis newspaper man, will deliver an address.

A representative of the American Pipe Organ Co. of Ohio is in Jackson installing a fine instrument in the new Methodist church, which is about to be completed; the building awaits the painters, who are considerably delayed.
