After years of being orphan, Cape Girardeau Central High School has been adopted by Mid-America Hotels; in addition, Parents as Teachers program has been adopted by Commerce Bank; this marks first time program, for parents with children through age 3, has been part of adopt-a-school program.

Adult inpatient psychiatric unit, first to operate in Cape Girardeau since 1987, will open in late November at Southeast Missouri Hospital; 14-bed acute unit will serve patients who are in psychiatric crisis; unit will be located on fifth floor of hospital's east wing.

25 years ago: Oct. 14, 1977

Combines and corn-pickers are once again rolling across Cape Girardeau grain fields, thanks to much-needed break from wet weather which has frequently hampered harvesting of corn and early-maturing soybeans this fall; with advancement of cool weather, farmers for most part have harvested their last hay crop.

50 years ago: Oct. 14, 1952

One hundred sixty-nine elementary and high school teachers are expected to visit Cape Girardeau business houses and industrial plants tomorrow as part of second annual Business-Education Day sponsored by Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce; 77th annual meeting of Southeast Missouri Teachers Association will follow Thursday and Friday at State College auditorium, with 3,000 teachers and administrators expected to attend.

Thad "Ted" Bullock, 304 N. Fountain, has purchased Johnston Piano Co., 813 Broadway, from Martin Johnston; Johnston and his wife plan to move to Florida, where he has acquired interest in beach hotel at Daytona.

75 years ago: Oct. 14, 1927

With 21 cents a pound not uncommon price for their product, farmers of Pemiscot County are finding this year's cotton crop probably will equal in money value that of previous years; W.F.D. Batjer, field man for Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce, who returned yesterday from Caruthersville where he judged farm exhibits of Pemiscot County Fair, tells of greatly improved conditions in that section of state.

Dirigible TC-53, presumably from Scott Field at Belleville, Ill., passes over Cape Girardeau shortly after noon; blimp swings over city and then turns and heads back toward northeast.
