Jackson - Group opposed to county zoning Thursday heard from candidates for first district county commissioner and took plans blasting members of county commission and planning commission; group also criticized provisions of zoning ordinance that voters will consider Nov. 3; if approved, measure will take effect Jan. 1.

Jackson - As many as 2,000 people may have registered to vote in Cape Girardeau County on Tuesday and Wednesday, final days to register in order to be eligible for Nov. 3 general election; people were standing in line both days at voter registration offices at Cape Girardeau and Jackson, and at registration sites at Cape Girardeau Public Library and on Southeast Missouri State University campus.

25 years ago: Oct. 16, 1977

The Rev. George W. Heslar, minister of Grace United Methodist Church from 1950 to 1960, opens revival services at Grace Church in morning; revival will continue each evening through Thursday.

Saturday showing of James Teackle Dennis collection of Egyptian Antiquities attracted more visitors than attended Oct. 1 opening of exhibit; attendance yesterday was 821, largest number of people to come to two-week-old exhibit, say Southeast Missouri State University officials.

50 years ago: Oct. 16, 1952

Southeast Missouri's teachers come back to Cape Girardeau for their annual two-day meeting, which for many will be lengthened into three by homecoming celebration of State College alumni continuing through Saturday; professional topics absorb visiting teachers in morning, with panel discussion of recent report of Missouri Citizens Commission on its state-wide school survey highlighting the day.

Closed for greater part of summer season, Orpheum Theater on Good Hope will reopen its doors tomorrow night with double feature program; front of show house has received new dress of paint and inside there have been some carpeting changes.

75 years ago: Oct. 16, 1927

Chester and Elmore Kassel, E.B. "Toby" Foster and Oscar Kaiser, members of local American Legion group, are back in Cape Girardeau after seven-week trip to Paris and other points in France as part of Legionnaire convention; first three returned yesterday, and Kaiser gets in today, after short visit at Litchfield, Ill.

Perryville - Reservations for 2,000 rooms indicate that attendance for Centennial Pageant Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights will be drawn from wide area, says the Rev. J.B. Platisha, assistant pastor of Church of the Assumption, sponsor of event; 100-year history of Perryville and Southeast Missouri will be traced over the three nights.
