Saying they didn't think anyone should have to tolerate the noise, dozens of Cape Girardeau residents filled the city council chamber last night to complain about loud parties in their neighborhood; they maintain Southeast Missouri State University students are the ones mainly responsible for the parties.

In a unanimous vote at yesterday's Cape Girardeau City Council session, councilmen approved the installation of three fountains in Capaha Park Lagoon.

50 years ago: Oct. 19, 1957

America is a showcase for the world -- Russia is another -- but in the battle for the good will and support of neutral nations of the world, the Soviet Union is showing to better advantage, Eleanor Roosevelt asserted to an audience of 2,300 educators at Houck Field house last night; she was the guest speaker at the concluding session of the annual meeting of the Southeast Missouri Teachers Association.

A number of residents of Cape Girardeau, Jackson and other communities report seeing the Russian space rocket in the morning; all describe it as brighter than a star and moving rapidly.

75 years ago: Oct. 19, 1932

Between 2,000 and 2,200 educators are expected for the two-day 1932 conference of the Southeast Missouri Teachers Association, which begins tomorrow.

The Missourian has again demonstrated it knows how to handle news while it is news; along with the newspaper's extensive coverage of Denver Wright's lion hunt on Towhead Island, the Missourian printed the first photos of the lions and hunters hardly 24 hours after the hunt ended; pictures of the hunt were rushed to St. Louis on Monday night, where they were engraved and flown back to Cape Girardeau by airplane for inclusion in Tuesday's edition.

100 years ago: Oct. 19, 1907

Cape Girardeau's new shoe factory makes its first shipment of shoes to headquarters in St. Louis; every pair was made by Cape Girardeau people; manager Nunn says that by the first of the year, he wants to have at least 400 people working in the big plant.

The Hoxie train is wrecked early in the morning six miles north of Naylor, Mo., an open switch causing the accident; about 15 passengers are injured.
