If final tests of system go as expected, resident of Cape Girardeau County will likely have 911 emergency telephone service in place next week; on Nov. 5, 1991, voters in county approved surcharge on their telephone bills to pay for 911 system.

Southeast Missouri State University's College of Business Administration is being renamed in honor of Donald L. Harrison, Cape Girardeau businessman and president of school's board of regents; it marks first time college at Southeast has been named for individual since Cape Girardeau school became university in 1972.

25 years ago: Oct. 25, 1978

Decision was made yesterday by city council to greatly reduce scope of annexation proceeding it initiated three years ago; council cut nearly in half amount of acreage sought; originally, city had sought to bring in nearly 16 square miles of land, including 1,800-acre section in Scott County which includes Municipal Airport.

Cape Girardeau Board of Education has come out in strong opposition to proposed Amendment 22 to Missouri Constitution, proposal board says would reduce local decision-making and possibly result in loss of right to set tax rates locally.

50 years ago: Oct. 25, 1953

Third Street Methodist Church and Hobbs Chapel recently acquired new pastor; the Rev. Robert Dyer Peterson came here from Trinity Church in St. Louis, replacing the Rev. Boytt B. Willis, who had completed his studies at State College.

The Rev. Robert Jank, pastor of Zion Lutheran Church at Pocahontas, sustains broken leg and multiple abrasions in morning car accident; Jank, who is serving as temporary pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church at Friedheim, is returning after holding services there, when he meets another car atop hill on Pocahontas road, after turning off of Highway 25.

75 years ago: Oct. 25, 1928

Harvey Ross, 48, employee of Edward Hely Stone Co. plant in south Cape Girardeau, died late yesterday afternoon of injuries sustained when he fell from ledge in rock quarry where he was working; it is estimated Ross fell 65 feet; fall fractured several bones and produced internal injuries that later proved fatal.

Launched at dinner meeting of Chamber of Commerce members last night, campaign to sell $10,000 in stock to secure location in Cape Girardeau of garment factory to employ 50 people is under way; drive is selling stock to move J.G. Heyman Mfg. Co. plant from Winchester, Ky., to Cape Girardeau.
