Sprigg Street Medical Center, which for past year has served almost 3,000 people who previously had limited or no access to medical care, may have to close its doors; Dr. William O.L. Seabaugh, longtime physician who founded facility at 24 N. Sprigg following his retirement from active practice, says clinic doesn't have funds to stay open.

New mural will be unveiled in Cape Girardeau, just in time for Southeast Missouri State University's homecoming celebration; work on Rural Heritage Mural Association's sixth mural began this week on west side of building that houses Shivelbine's Music store; it pays homage to city's musical legacy.

25 years ago: Oct. 26, 1978

Local landmark for more than half a century is giving way to progress; The Missourian's 80-foot Spanish tower that for 53 years concealed chimney in its eight-foot-square interior is being removed for installation of new newspaper plant boiler system.

Southeast Missouri State University's requests for both operating and capital improvement funds are faring well at state level so far; president Robert E. Leestamper told board of regents yesterday; he noted that unless recommendations of Coordinating Board for Higher Education are drastically cut, it won't be necessary to increase student fees for next year beyond $15 per semester increase already approved.

50 years ago: Oct. 26, 1953

Waldo P. Johnson of St. Louis, who has served in position past two years, was re-elected to another two-year term as president of State College Alumni Association as one of concluding features of 1953 Homecoming Saturday; Dorothy Quarles Weirich of St. Louis County was elected vice president, and Hattie Eicholtz was re-elected secretary treasurer.

Workers are engaged in lifting roof of Old Broadway School and will replace it with flat roof to harmonize with modern design that has been created for office building for Cape Girardeau Medical Arts Building Inc.

75 years ago: Oct. 26, 1928

Seventy Southeast Missouri bankers and representatives of banks and bond houses in St. Louis, Kansas City, Chicago and New York City, as well as leaders of banking business in Missouri, are in Cape Girardeau attending annual fall meeting of Group 6 of Missouri Bankers Association.

Committee, sent by Jackson Chamber of Commerce to investigate proposition of establishing cheese factory in Jackson, motored to Mountain Grove this week to look over factory there; continuing on to Willow Springs, group also looked over milk condensery and came to conclusion that latter industry would be good fit for Jackson.
