The once-affluent City Park Department has climaxed a three-year economic plunge by falling into a $3,000 deficit; park commissioner J.W. McBride attributes the condition to rising labor costs, the acquisition of heavy equipment, expenditures at the swimming pool and the Capaha Park lagoon, and a park tax levy that was twice reduced in recent years.

A combat medal reached a Cape Girardeau man yesterday, more than 18 years after the World War II action in which he won it; Howard G. Bock was presented the Distinguished Flying Cross by Rep. Paul C. Jones.

1938

Conservation agents Vernon Bennett of St. Louis and R.G. Ranney recently found a fish trap on the Whitewater River upstream from Whitewater station, which they promptly destroyed with axes; a rock dam had been constructed across the stream and in the center the trap, made of small timbers, was built so that fish would be forced into it, but couldn't escape.

O.E. Eggimann has leased two rooms of the new Houck Building, 514 Independence St., where he'll open the Eggimann Feed and Produce Co.

1913

Charles Robert, a well-known resident of Cape Girardeau, died last night at his home; he was 73 years old and was born in Germany; he settled with his parents in New York when he was about 4, but after about a two-year stay, the family moved to Oran, Mo., and then to a farm near Kelso, Mo.

Three special rice-threshing machines, manufactured here by the Freeze threshing company, are loaded onto four flat cars at the foot of Independence Street on the Frisco switch tracked and sent south to Arkansas.
