If campus parking annoys Southeast Missouri State University students, it isn't apparent; only four people offer suggestions during a two-hour open forum on campus parking held at the University Center.

The 60th anniversary of the Cape Girardeau Business and Professional Women's Club is observed by members in the evening; Mrs. Kay Newman is presented a plaque in recognition of her service as the club's first president.

Mayor W.E. Davis confirmed yesterday that a location near the entrance to Arena Park is the Navy's choice as a site to construct an armory; he says the council will be guided by the wishes of the citizens in making its decision on the proposal.

This week, Griffs Burger Bar, a national chain, began operation at Independence Street and Sheridan Drive; in addition, Steimle's Diner will soon occupy a renovated dwelling at 224 S. Frederick St., and will be operated by Ed and Paul Steimle and their wives.

1939

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- The Chaffee Mfg. Co., which has been closed for two weeks, reopened yesterday with 40 people called back to work; it is expected that an additional 100 employees will be put to work next Monday, and by the following week the list will be about 200.

Army trucks rumble along the highway toward Cape Girardeau, the first step in the mobilization of the 140th Infantry, Missouri National Guard, for field maneuvers under "war" conditions at Sam A. Baker State Park near Patton, Missouri; a detachment of 85 Cape Girardeau Guardsmen in command of Sgt. Glenn Lampley goes to St. Louis in five trucks to bring back an 82-machine convoy of motor vehicles, which will be used to transport the region's troops to Camp Sam Baker.

1914

Work on the riverfront improvements is proceeding rapidly, now that it has been organized properly; with the river at a low stage, the concrete wall is rapidly taking shape.

Mrs. Mark H. Salisbury and Mrs. John S. Kochtitzky, representing the Daughters of the American Revolution, and Allan H. Hinchey of the Cape Girardeau Commercial Club leave on the early morning train for St. Mary's, Missouri, from where they will travel by auto over the old Kings Highway to Ste. Genevieve, Missouri; the DAR is preparing to mark historic points along the old road.
