Missouri Attorney General William Webster, here last night to speak at the Central High School football banquet, said he still has plans to open a satellite office in Cape Girardeau County to primarily handle consumer complaints.

The long-awaited removal of the abandoned Missouri Pacific Railroad tracks in Cape Girardeau is underway; removal of the 3.3-mile section of track that was abandoned by the Union Pacific Systems in 1985 began yesterday; a portion of the line runs down the middle of Independence Street.

50 years ago: Nov. 6, 1961

ORAN, Mo. -- Dr. Mark F. Scully, president of State College in Cape Girardeau, was the speaker yesterday at dedication ceremonies for the new elementary school plant for the Scott County School District in Oran.

The Jackson Board of Aldermen sets Nov. 21 as the date for a special election to select a city collector; the new city collector will fill the unexpired term of Joe Howard, which runs until April 1963.

75 years ago: Nov. 6, 1936

The post office in Cape Girardeau, like those in other cities, will be asked to handle the detailed task of listing employees and employers under the new federal Social Security act, which will become effective Jan. 1; there will be about 10,000 workers to be qualified and classified by number in Cape Girardeau city and the area served by this post office.

Brickwork for a 35-by-80-foot building being erected in the 600 block of Good Hope Street is nearing completion; when finished, it will be occupied by Ruh's Market, which is now located just east of the site of the new building.

100 years ago: Nov. 6, 1911

An automobile going down Broadway hill runs into a buggy occupied by Mr. and Mrs. R.T. Giboney and smashes a wheel of the vehicle; the car, driven by a boy who is accompanied by another young fellow and two young girls, drives off before the driver's name can be ascertained; Giboney is very indignant at the young driver.

Bill Miller is planning to build a bowling alley in the building formerly occupied by the Gem Theater at Jackson.
