Knights of Columbus convention activity moves into high gear at the Arena Building, with six state committees meeting to discuss the past year's activities and to plan for the coming year.

Ray Eliot, former great football coach at the University of Illinois, will be the speaker at State College's first All-Sports Banquet on May 18; formerly, the college had two banquets to honor football and basketball, but with the ever-expanding sports program, it was decided to have one dinner for all teams and coaches.

1939

One-way traffic for Main Street, south of Themis Street, resorted to Saturday when Water Street was closed because of floodwaters, may be tried out again some time in the future; the southbound movement of traffic was utilized when some trucks, usually unloading on Water Street, were forced to stop on Main Street to discharge their cargo, the resulting traffic jam bringing the emergency routing.

Workers begin painting the exterior of the St. Charles Hotel, 45 N. Main St.; W.E. Redding has the contract; between 35 and 40 gallons of paint will be used to paint the old building gray with white trim.

1914

The L.S. Joseph home on North Street, one of the prettiest places in Cape Girardeau, is sold at auction by the sheriff to R.B. Oliver for $5,160; Oliver is reported to have bought the property for his son, Palmer, who was recently married.

County engineer Dennis Scivally reports he has finished repairing the bridge on the Rock Levee Road, near the old toll gate, and that the road to Illmo is again in good condition.
