A Southeast Missouri State University Faculty Senate committee has formulated proposed guidelines regarding partisan political activities on campus, but the senate isn't expected to further debate the issue until fall; the committee was appointed in October after some faculty members expressed displeasure with the University Foundation paying costs relating to then-President Ronald Reagan's Sept. 14 appearance at the Show Me Center.

1964

The Rev. Edwin C. Budlong is installed as pastor of St. John's United Church of Christ near Jackson and St. James United Church of Christ at Tilsit in the afternoon at the latter church; the Rev. C. Russell Turner of Christ United Church of Christ in Cape Girardeau is the installing pastor.

Ten new cars were damaged by smoke that completely filled the building housing Harris Motor Car Co., 232 Broadway, when fire broke out there at 7:10 p.m. last night; an undetermined number of office records were lost, and structural damage to the two-story brick building is possible.

1939

With state and district officers in attendance, the Southeast Missouri I.O.O.F. Association opens its annual district convention at Houck Field House; there are more than 300 members of the I.O.O.F. and the Rebekah Lodge on hand as the opening session begins with president Walter Beck of Charleston, Mo., in charge.

A.E. Miles has purchased three acres of land on Highway 61 from James H. Adams; the plot is on the east side of the highway, immediately south of the site upon which a large livestock barn was destroyed by fire two years ago; Miles hasn't definitely made plans for the tract, but he is considering building a stock pavilion; at present, he conducts stock sales at a barn on the west side of the highway, the building being leased from the Cape Horse and Mule Co.

1914

The new Lutheran church at Illmo is dedicated, with a large crowd in attendance from both Scott and Cape Girardeau counties; the church, which stands on a commanding site on an elevation, was recently completed at a cost of about $10,000; the elegant building replaces the old rock church, one of the oldest churches in the county.

Nelle Burger, president of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union of Missouri, addresses a packed house at the Presbyterian church in the evening; the talk is one of the most eloquent appeals for the temperance cause ever heard here.
