Former Oak Ridge resident Dr. Linda M. Godwin is scheduled to be one of the astronauts aboard the shuttle Discovery, when it blasts off in April 1990; this will be Godwin's first space flight, who has worked at the Johnson Space Center in Houston since 1980.

Federal regulators take over three Missouri savings and loan institutions, including First Federal of Southeast Missouri; the S&L will continue business, but a review examiner with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation in Kansas City will be in charge of its operation.

1964

William G. Hart, 70, co-editor of the Southeast Weekly Bulletin newspaper, dies in the morning at a local hospital; he is survived by his wife, Beulah Hart.

The Cape Girardeau County Court learns the county farm would be an impractical location for rest areas on Interstate 55, as had been proposed; Dale Carney, District 10 engineer for the State Highway Department, tells the court the farm is too narrow where it adjoins the superhighway and wouldn't have adequate room for access and exit ramps.

The body of a transient, identified as W.E. Skelton, about 55 years old, is discovered in the outer cavern of an old cave, once used as a beer cellar, just east of Frederick Street in Happy Hollow; the cavern, entered through a huge stone arch, once served as a cooling cellar for the old Hanney Brewery.

Through the annexation approved by Jackson voters Tuesday, approximately 125 persons will be added to the city; the population, as recorded in the 1930 census, was 2,465; the county seat, it is estimated, is now close to the 3,000 mark in population.

1914

A fire which broke out in the walls between the old Metz saloon building and the place occupied by the South Cape restaurant destroyed those buildings last night; while the restaurant proprietor suffered the greatest loss, it is said that John Metz still had some bottled goods in the saloon building, which had been stripped of its fixtures a week ago; the buildings were owned by John Job.

The Cape Girardeau School Board met Saturday and approved the plans and specifications for the new central school building; the contract for the new school will be let April 27.
