The cities of Cape Girardeau and Jackson have agreed to provide a total of $45,000 to help fund a feasibility study of a proposed 8,500-acre recreational lake in parts of Cape Girardeau and Bollinger counties; Cape Girardeau will furnish $25,000 toward the $98,687 study, while Jackson will contribute $20,000.

A foul taste and odor noticeable in some of Cape Girardeau's water the past week is a result of a natural occurrence, according to Union Electric Co. officials, who say the water is safe.

1963

The Cape Girardeau Country Club Golf Course on Cape Rock Drive apparently will expand to 18 holes in the near future; at a straw vote of members present at a meeting Wednesday night, it was decided to purchase 64 acres of land north of the present course.

A Cape Girardeau member of the Civil Air Patrol, Cadet Kenneth McElreath, is one of eight cadets from eight states to be selected to attend a two-week flight instruction course at Wichita, Kan., next month; McElreath, 17, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Norman McElreath.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Dr. Ivan Lee Holt of St. Louis and Dr. William W. Peele of Greensboro, N.C., are elected bishops of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, on the first ballot of the quadrennial conference, in session here; Holt spent four years as pastor of Centenary Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau.

A design submitted by Mrs. O.A. Knehans of Cape Girardeau for a contest sponsored by the chamber of commerce to select a cachet that will be emblematic of the city, has been chosen by judges; Knehans will receive a $5 prize.

1913

A remonstrance is being circulated against the paving of Good Hope Street; it is rumored that a number of downtown merchants are opposing the work, because they are afraid it will benefit the Haarig business district.

Ben Green, the champion fine stockman of Fruitland, finally has found a location for a big stock plant near Cape Girardeau; he has purchased five acres in the Sturdivant Addition, which was owned by the Osterloh estate; it is located east of the old Thilenius property.
