Cape Girardeau lawyer Kenneth McManaman has been appointed Jackson municipal judge, and Jackson lawyer John P. Lichtenegger has been named to replace Jackson City Attorney Kenneth L. Waldron, who served for more than a decade.

Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department had a busy April, handling 299 complaints, an increase of 39 percent over last year; for the first three months of this year, the department had 716 complaints, compared to 463 in 1980 and 424 in 1979.

50 years ago: May 5, 1956

Around 1,500 pupils from 47 area high schools are putting the fruits of their school careers to the test at State College as they engage in contests to demonstrate both their academic and athletic achievements.

Friends, former students and fellow workers of the past and present paid heartfelt tribute last night to Alma Schrader for a half-century of service to the youth of Cape Girardeau and to the community itself as one of its most beloved teachers; she was guest of honor at a dinner at May Greene School, where she spent 35 of her 50 years as an educator.

75 years ago: May 5, 1931

Baseball fans of Cape Girardeau are to get their first introduction to night baseball, says Capahas manager William Sullivan; he has contracted with the California Owls to come here the night of May 22 for a game at Fairground Park.

The Cape Girardeau County Court orders that the county tax levy for 1931 be 58 cents on the $100 valuation, the same as for the past year, but changes the levy for two funds, the county road and bridge fund and the general revenue fund, in order to provide more money in the latter to aid in meeting the county's mounting pauper expense.

100 years ago: May 5, 1906

The contract for the residence for Dr. R.F. Wichterich, which will be built at the corner of South Lorimier and Good Hope streets, was let yesterday to August Vogelsang; Henry Ossenkop, the architect, drew the plans for the two-story brick structure.

The home of J.H. Himmelberger on Bellevue Street will be somewhat remodeled and enlarged; a new roof will be put on and several rooms added to the rear; W.W. Taylor of Jackson has the contract, and architect Henry Ossenkop drew the plans.
