1963

Dr. Robert S. Hunt, son of Mr. and Mrs. James B. Hunt of Cape Girardeau, receives a medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis.

The Cape Girardeau City Council eases some of the restrictions in its experimental ordinance intended to keep juveniles out of taverns; the amended ordinance now will prohibit children under 17 from "loitering" in establishments where liquor or beer is sold, unless accompanied by a parent.

1938

Prosecuting Attorney Robert Oliver declares he is instituting a campaign against all forms of gambling in Cape Girardeau County; Sheriff Fred Hartle says he will aid Oliver in the effort to wipe out illegal enterprises.

Demosthenes Kostianes, owner with his brother, Pete, of the Manhattan Restaurant, 437 Broadway, is making plans to travel back to his native home in Sparta, Greece, next week; there, he will visit his mother, Lucretia Kostianes, and a sister.

1913

E.E. Whitworth, U.S. deputy marshal, nearly strangles to death on smoke from a fire that consumes the contents of his house on West Broadway; awakening to smoke, Whitworth hurls a chair through a window to make his escape; as luck would have it, the chair held his clothes; he quickly pulls on trousers and coat and races to summon the fire department.

Mr. and Mrs. Warren Baker received word yesterday from their daughter, Mrs. F.E. Townsend, that she is on her way home; Mrs. Townsend and her husband have been living in Mexico; because of the continued disturbances there, all American women and children have been ordered to leave.
