Steps to enact urban redevelopment in several areas of Cape Girardeau could proceed if the city council would move to support such action, Martin Hecht, one of the major supporters of the redevelopment concept here, tells a gathering of two dozen downtown businessmen and property owners; he also announces that planning consultants will be in town June 24 to survey the areas which are being considered for redevelopment.

Security at the county jail in Jackson is being tightened as a result of new regulations being implemented in the sheriff's department; newly appointed chief deputy Eugene Coombs, who is handling the day-to-day operation of the department, says he is in the process of implementing new rules concerning procedures at the jail and in the sheriff's department.

50 years ago: June 13, 1955

Mrs. Paul A. Mueller Jr. of Jackson, who on Friday had been endorsed for the post of county magistrate, is formally appointed to that position by Gov. Phil M. Donnelly.

A campaign to raise $9,000 as the community share of a $12,000 land-purchase program for the location of the Central Tank Co., manufacturers of pressure tanks, on a site at the Central Packing Co., is announced by Ray W. Call, president of the Chamber of Commerce.

75 years ago: June 13, 1930

Pouring of concrete for the second section of the new Teachers College stadium at Houck Field is completed at noon, and the work of smoothing and finishing the exterior of the seating sections is done in the afternoon; forms are being erected for the pretentious entrance and for the third section adjacent to the field house.

A contract for grading and construction of bridges and culverts on Highway 74 from Cape Girardeau to Dutchtown has been awarded to M.K. Orr and Bunnell & Mack of Paragould, Ark., contractors.

100 years ago: June 13, 1905

The people of Jackson are getting ready to take a big step forward; on June 27, they will vote on a proposition to bond the city for $27,000 to build an electric and waterworks system.

Sunday morning at St. Vincent's Catholic Church, the Rev. Robert J. Powers, C.M., celebrated his first Mass; he was ordained a priest Saturday in St. Louis, where he has been studying at Kenrick Seminary; he will remain in Cape Girardeau for two weeks, before leaving for Rome, where he will spend two years studying in the International College.
