The Rev. Vaughn C. Whiting, a member of the graduating class of 1980 of Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, is installed as pastor of Grace Lutheran Church at Uniontown, Mo., and Zion Lutheran Church at Longtown, Mo.

A celebration is held at St. Mary's Cathedral honoring the golden jubilee of Sister M. Clarence of Appleton, Wis., formerly of this area; Sister Clarence, the daughter of the late Ferdinand and Helen Seyer of Cape Girardeau, entered the community of Franciscan Sisters, Daughters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, in 1930.

50 years ago: June 22, 1955

The foundation has been staked out for a new $75,000 education building to join to the plant of the First Baptist Church at Jackson; the building will be of brick construction, three stories in height and will be 56 feet by 69 feet in size.

BELL CITY, Mo. -- The uranium fever that hit this section of Crowley's Ridge in the early spring is continuing to build with at least two people taking mineral leases on the rugged terrain which marks the area; largest lease-holder is apparently O.F. Sitzes of Belleville, Ill., formerly of Charleston, Mo., who has obtained mineral rights on 1,169 acres and expects within the next three weeks to have a drilling rig in the area to take core samples.

75 years ago: June 22, 1930

The Junior and Senior Walther Leagues of Trinity Lutheran Church hold an all-day outing on Castor River; a special church service for them is held at 8 a.m., and following Sunday school, members leave in automobiles.

The thermometer at the Teachers College peaks in the afternoon at 99 degrees; however, commercial thermometers in the downtown and residential districts of Cape Girardeau vary from 100 to 110 degrees; at Jackson, the government observer reports a reading of 99 degrees.

100 years ago: June 22, 1905

Representatives of the Gurley Engineering Co. of St. Louis are in town consulting with the promoters of the new electric street railway; the engineers go over the proposed route of the new line, and in a week they will have complete specifications and details to submit to contractors.

Last evening several young black men met and formed an association, the purpose of which is to bring them together occasionally to discuss current affairs; R.S. Cobb is president of the club, and Charles Patterson is secretary.
