Construction is set to begin next week on a 1,000-square-foot addition to the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce building; the addition, which will be built on the east side of the building at 601 N. Kingshighway, will house two offices and a conference room.

The Cape Girardeau County Court turns down a request from Drury Development that the county appropriate $735,000 for a new multipurpose building in Cape Girardeau.

50 years ago: June 28, 1959

The Rev. C.E. Mount, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church for the past 12 years, announces he has accepted a call to become executive secretary of the Georgia Synod, Presbyterian Church in the United States.

The Cape Girardeau Police Department announces a ban on discharging firecrackers within the city limits; the ban is the result of hundreds of complaints that came to the department since it became permissible June 20.

75 years ago: June 28, 1934

"Cape Girardeau County has as good a foundation as any county in the state for the development of a city-county plan for the improvement of highways and their beautification," says Judge Harry S. Truman of Kansas City, who is taken by W.W. Bergmann, chairman of the Cape Girardeau Special Road District Commission, on an inspection tour of the beautification projects.

Two tons of Irish potatoes are donated by Ira Hastings of the Hastings Cannery Co. at McClure, Ill., to the Central Relief organization for Cape Girardeau's needy families.

100 years ago: June 28, 1909

M.E. Lesem of Kennett, Mo., is in Cape Girardeau in the morning making final arrangements to take over management of the Roth Tobacco Co. on July 1 and to begin preparing to move his family here; Lesem has been selling tobacco for more than 25 years.

The Cape Girardeau School Board fills the two remaining vacancies in the school faculties; D.H. Haldaman of Cape Girardeau will be the new assistant principal of the high school, and Grace Foncannon of Kirksville, Mo., will be supervisor of music and drawing.
