A handful of data collectors begins knocking on Cape Girardeau doors as part of the state's reassessment and equalization program; they are going door-to-door in subdivisions along the northern fringe of the city; in months to follow, they will make an attempt to survey every residence and commercial structure in the city.

Cape Girardeau detectives have solved more than 30 burglaries committed in the city during the past several months with the arrests of four people, two of them juveniles; a large quantity of stolen property, including silver, jewelry and antique coins, has been recovered.

50 years ago: June 30, 1957

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- When Frisco passenger train 807 pulls into Chaffee at noon, engineer J.R. Franck steps from the cab for the last time, completing 50 years of service; he was first employed by the company on June 30, 1907, as a boilermaker's helper.

Interrupted by rain late yesterday, the celebration incident to the "freeing" of the Mississippi River traffic bridge at Cape Girardeau is concluded this evening, when thousands of people gather at the waterfront for an hourlong fireworks display.

75 years ago: June 30, 1932

Sale of the S.B. Hunter residence on Bloomfield road was made yesterday to W.W. Davis of Springfield, Mo.; with the modern brick home, Davis purchased about five acres of ground, including an attractive park and rose garden.

Loos Brothers of Jackson, veteran thresher men, have made repairs to their threshing rig and are ready to begin work; L.G. Loos, senior member of the firm, is starting on his 43rd year as an operator of threshers, and the partnership is beginning its 34th season.

100 years ago: June 30, 1907

The Rev. Theodore Ludwig, pastor of the German Methodist church, once again fills the pulpit here; he had been away for two weeks on a visit in Illinois.

The English Methodist church, which is holding services in the Common Pleas Courthouse, is having problems accommodating the large crowds attending Sunday services; last Sunday, attendance at Sunday School numbered more than 100.
