Only a few local issues will face area voters who go to the polls tomorrow to decide the fate of constitutional Amendment 1; the proposal calls for issuance of $600 million in bonds to improve state facilities and those of local governments in Missouri.

Saying it may give a boost to the construction industry and benefit potential home buyers as well, Cape Girardeau County Court enters into a $40 million bond issue program with four other Southeast Missouri counties which would help finance home mortgages for low- and moderate-income families.

50 years ago: June 7, 1957

Paul R. Buchmiller of Sikeston, Mo., architect, has been employed by the State College Board of Regents to provide the architectural and technical assistance necessary to complete application for a $1,250,000 dormitory center on the campus; the application must be prepared for the federal Housing and Home Finance Agency.

Cape Girardeau's public schools, which have never fallen below the state's Triple-A rating since this system was started a few years ago, again have received it this year.

75 years ago: June 7, 1932

Fire, which twice in 24 hours threatened destruction of a two-story brick building at 16 Broadway, occupied by Fletcher's Stores, was checked by firemen and only negligible damages resulted; the fires occurred at 4:30 p.m. yesterday in the basement and at 1:03 a.m. today on the first floor.

Simpson Oil Co. announces it will open two oil stations in Cape Girardeau tomorrow; one of the stations is in the Hecht building on South Main Street, with Dave C. Carroll in charge; the other station is in the 400 block of Good Hope Street, which will be in the charge of William Wickham.

100 years ago: June 7, 1907

The lawn fete on the St. Vincent College grounds terminated last night in a proverbial blaze of glory; the grounds were filled to overflowing with large crowds of Elks and their girls, and many others.

The steamer Chester, which has been running in the Cape Girardeau trade, has been sold to a company which is contemplating opening a line on the Missouri River.
