One month after exposed asbestos insulation was found around the rusty boilers of two steam locomotives in Capaha and Arena parks, city officials still haven't decided how to deal with it; the city council is expected to discuss the problem for the first time Monday.

Groundbreaking ceremonies for Parkway Honda, the third car dealership to locate in the new Cape Girardeau Autopark on South Kingshighway, are held; Parkway joins Town and Country Motors and Kingsway Nissan at the location.

50 years ago: Aug. 16, 1961

Fallout shelters, though use isn't confined to that purpose, are being planned as features of the six new dormitory units to be built on the State College campus under a $2.5 million loan approved Monday by the Housing and Home Finance Agency.

Eugene J. McNeely, a native of Jackson and a former student at State College, is named president of the American Telephone and Telegraph Co., the world's largest industrial corporation.

75 years ago: Aug. 16, 1936

The Rev. R.M. Talbert, superintendent of the Southeast Missouri district of Christian Churches, speaks at the union worship service at Courthouse Park; the service is sponsored by the Cape Girardeau Ministerial Alliance.

Thrilling to the spectacle of speed, a crowd of about 1,500 people lines the riverfront to watch the first boat race staged on the Mississippi River here in years; standing in the hot sun, spectators watch a dozen motorboats match speed with nothing but honor at stake.

100 years ago: Aug. 16, 1911

Ruth Kelso returns home after several weeks' absence in the Eastern states and later at the home of her grandparents in Springfield, Mo.; she is accompanied home by her grandmother, Mrs. J.W. Kelso, and her cousin, Kathryn Kelso, both of Springfield.

The great opera singer Giuseppe Campanari will be the chief attraction of the Normal School Lyceum course this winter; Campanari sings at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York.
