The Jackson Board of Aldermen took preliminary steps last night toward annexing a plot of land about a mile north of the city by including in the annexation U.S. 61 from the city limits to the plot; a Knights of Columbus hall will be built on the tract.

There are few surprises in Cape Girardeau County primary elections, with incumbents taking the first step in winning most offices; Assessor Jerry Reynolds, Sheriff Herman "Bob" Gribler and Coroner Harold Cobb all win contested Democratic primaries; Republican Dwight Thomas wins a contested primary for sheriff.

50 years ago: Aug. 7, 1959

Residents of Southeast Missouri towns and cities in Arkansas protested discontinuance of Cotton Belt passenger service in their localities at a hearing before a trial examiner of the Interstate Commerce Commission in Paragould, Ark., this week; testimony was given by Missouri residents of Illmo, Fornfelt, Bell City, Campbell, Malden and Dexter.

The 52 employees of Federal Materials Co. on South Sprigg Street have an admirable safety record; for 704 days, there has been no lost time from injury at the plant.

75 years ago: Aug. 7, 1934

After receiving a petition requesting such action, the Cape Girardeau County Court yesterday ordered that a proposal to dissolve the Delta Special Road District be submitted to the voters of the district.

As many as 1,000 head of cattle may be purchased in Cape Girardeau County within the next three weeks, under the farm drought relief measure; the cattle will be shipped to southern states, where they will be pastured until they put on enough flesh to be butchered.

100 years ago: Aug. 7, 1909

Mayor M.E. Leming last night signed a contract with Kettle River Quarries Co. to proceed with the paving of Main Street with wood blocks; the company will use as much local labor and material as possible.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Daues come down on the riverboat in the morning for a visit; Mrs. Daues will remain until Tuesday, when she will return to St. Louis; Mr. Daues is having his vacation and will remain here for some time.
