The Missouri Advisory Council on Historic Preservation holds its summer meeting at Port Cape Girardeau; the council is considering the nomination of Hanover Lutheran Church to the National Register of Historic Places.

50 years ago: Aug. 7, 1961

Salary increases for city employees amounting to $90,830 a year, payable from proceeds of a one-cent municipal gasoline tax, are recommended by a special mayor's finance committee to the city council.

The Gately Store, 2 N. Main St., fails to open for business this morning; the store had been doing business through last week, but its stock reportedly was moved elsewhere Saturday night and on Sunday; management can't be reached for a statement.

75 years ago: Aug. 7, 1936

It has been 37 days since enough rain has fallen in Cape Girardeau and the immediate vicinity to do more than settle the dust; the drought has been severe in its effect.

John W. Oliver, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.B. Oliver Jr., leaves for Kansas City, where he will be associated with the law firm of McCune, Caldwell and Downing; young Oliver graduated from the Arts and Science School of the University of Missouri in 1934 and from the law school in June this year at the age of 21.

100 years ago: Aug. 7, 1911

Twenty-two railroad cars of a circus pass through Cape Girardeau in the morning on their way to Jackson, where this week it will be the prominent attraction at the annual Homecomers gathering; the big celebration starts tomorrow.

The Dexter, Mo., school district will vote tomorrow on a proposition to bond the district for $10,000 for the purpose of buying the Christian college building and grounds and equipping the building for a high school.
