Quite a few Cape Girardeans turned their gazes skyward yesterday as the Airship Sea World sailed over the city about noon; the blimp was en route from Memphis to an overnight stop at the Parks Metropolitan Airport near Belleville, Ill.
The city of Cape Girardeau has received official notification that the Environmental Protection Agency has approved a $3.5 million grant for a new wastewater treatment plant; the EPA grant, along with state and local funds, will finance construction of a $7 million plant.
Arena Park is the busiest spot in Cape Girardeau, as a variety of entries continues to flood into the SEMO District Fair; this evening, the first scheduled event will take place in front of the grandstand, when stock car races are presented.
Initial survey work leading toward the establishment of a second Presbyterian Church in Cape Girardeau is initiated by Lois Calhoun, church extension worker for the Presbyterian Church in the United States; the proposed new church wouldn't draw its membership from the existing congregation.
Members of Missouri's Golden Troopers, the drum and bugle corps of the Louis K. Juden Post of the American Legion, voted last night to participate in the national convention of the Legion in New York City Sept. 19 to 23; $2,500 will have to be raised to send the state champion corps to the national competition.
Jackson is among the Missouri towns that will be getting a new post office building, with the work scheduled to begin before the end of the year; a location for the $75,000 building hasn't been selected.
While Henry J. Brinkopf, prominent farmer of Cape Girardeau Route 3, and his family are in Cape Girardeau in the morning, his new cow barn catches fire and is destroyed; nearly all of the neighbors are also in town to see the Ringling Bros. Circus; fortunately, neighbor Ben Heiser is at home; through hard work, assisted later by Ernest Heiser, the fire is contained to the barn.
The first day's enrollment at the state Normal School this year was 240, an increase of 28 over last year; on the second day it was 294; today the enrollment reaches 320.
