The 130th annual SEMO District Fair ends its weeklong run, with slightly more than 20,000 visiting the event on the final day of the exposition; entertaining before the grandstand in the evening is country and western singer Jerry Reed.

Two life-size tiger replicas have been installed on the roof of the Central High School gymnasium; the menacing cats were donated to the school several years ago and have been in storage most of the time since.

50 years ago: Sept. 14, 1960

Carl Perkins entertains in the evening in front of the grandstand at the SEMO District Fair; horse racing will highlight Thursday's activities; 60 horses, possibly the largest string of harness racing stock in the history of the exposition, are on hand.

SIKESTON, Mo. -- The Ralph Boyer Construction Co. of Sikeston submitted a low bid of $389,000 to construction sections "C" and "D" of the federal housing project in the northeast section of town; sections "A" and "B" are already under construction.

75 years ago: Sept. 14, 1935

Students have resumed their annual school year pursuits at St. Vincent's College; this year there are 95 young men, who are studying for the Catholic priesthood, enrolled; states represented in the student body are Iowa, Utah, Illinois, Louisiana, Wisconsin, Colorado, California, Kansas, Mississippi and Texas.

In an investigation of the circulation of worthless $10 bills in various Southeast Missouri towns during the last month, federal and local officers have arrested five suspects; a series of the counterfeited bills were handed out during the recent Jackson Homecomers celebration.

100 years ago: Sept. 14, 1910

Frisco engineers are at work taking soundings along the Cape Girardeau riverfront and measuring the levee for the purpose of making a report as to the feasibility and probable cost of the proposed improvements called for by the city.

Private mailboxes for Cape Girardeau residents will be provided through the generosity of First National Bank, cashier L.S. Joseph having made arrangements with the Patent Novelty Co. of Fulton, Ill., through its representative, W.M. Johnson, who is in the city.
