Paul Broyhill, chairman of the Broyhill Furniture Co., one of the largest furniture manufacturers in the nation, was in Cape Girardeau last night for the opening of a Broyhill Showcase Gallery at Hutson's Fine Furniture, 43 S. Main St.

50 years ago: Sept. 19, 1960

In what police describe as a "professional job," burglars broke into the safe at the Schaper's IGA store on West Main Street in Jackson over the weekend and took more than $700; the thieves gained entrance to the safe by cutting the hinges off the door.

Burglars entered two Cape Girardeau schools over the weekend, taking $432 from the Central High cafeteria, while gaining no loot at Jefferson.

75 years ago: Sept. 19, 1935

Mrs. John P. Meyers of Cape Girardeau is establishing a dress shop at 419 Broadway; the business will be known as The Vogue.

The newly formed Beard, Deevers & Estes Funeral Co. opens its establishment at 118 S. Sprigg St., with a formal opening planned for Oct. 5 and 6; partners in the business are Ed Deevers, Willard Estes and Chester Beard.

100 years ago: Sept. 19, 1910

Good Hope Street is to have a new business building; J.F. Anderson is preparing to build a new structure to house the Miller & Kinder Drug Store; the old building at 625-627 Good Hope St. will be razed.

A petition with the signatures of several hundred Cape Girardeau businessmen and property owners is presented to the city council, demanding the return of the Frisco shops here; on a vote of 7-1, the council rejects the citizens' petition.
